Hi folks, I have a 250N engine that I plan to dump the e-start and just keep the kick start. Reason is the battery and electrical system in the bike the engine is going into is too small to support an electric start.
I have a manual on order, but not sure if it will tell me the watts or amps pulled by the starter motor or the wattage that the stator will put out, does anyone know off hand?

It seems a lot of work to remove and seal the starter mount
I would just leave it in place and use the kick start
Better still the alternator is in the SD engine and use a lithium battery which are much smaller than the original SD lead acid

Alternator 130W IIRC on the 250. Is the motor power shown on the end casting ? - 0.6kW as a guess. Should be able to get a small enough battery to supply the amps - if you pay enough for it !

Starter motor pulls all the amps it can get, only limited by the size of the cables, condition of connections, resistance across the solenoid and internal resistance of the battery. That's why AGM batteries crank faster- lower internal resistance......

Thanks guys, I already have a AGM battery, it's tiny and under the seat hump, couldn't get a lot larger in there. I am not sure it has the capacity to crank a starter motor and I have none of the wiring, relays/solenoid or button for the e-start either

That battery looks big enough to spin an SD engine?
Never noticed the "0.6kW" stamped on the starter motor before- but it is definitely there! It does work out a hefty 50 amp draw at 12 volts though. Trouble is- you never maintain that 12V when cranking, bacause of the reasons I gave- more like 8-10V. The series wound DC motor doesn't care- it still wants the same power draw, so more like 60-75A at that reduced voltage.
This is why a lot of old bikes fail to start on the starter motor, but will kick off- the coils only get a fraction of battery voltage when they most need it. Not a problem with the SD's though with self generating CDI- one reason they are good and reliable starters!
I would try that battery....

Thanks, Once the engine is rebuilt I will try the starter then, will do it on the bench first with that battery as I'll have to make up the other electrical bits to go with it

Got my Haynes manual (£7 on flea bay) so will be tearing into the engine this coming weekend!
Measuring up the mount points, chain line overall height and width, the 250 is going to take quite a lot of work to get into the CD.
Maybe I need a running superdream to ride while the CD is torn down?!

Got my Haynes manual...... Use the Haynes in conjunction with the proper Honda manual is best- where they differ then go with the Honda one. I think you need 20 posts to access it, but you are about there now anyway..... honda-superdream.co.uk/board/29/manuals

The CD tank got priority, and a 40 mile ride out did start on the SD engine. looks immaculate inside the top end my son's first engine tear down 👍

The Haynes is not bad, I have quite a lot of the older Honda manuals from the Hondatwins.net guys, but they don't have a 250/400N shop manual as they never got the Superdream that side of the pond.

Head is off, bores look good, can still see the honing marks. however, the exhaust valve on one side looks eroded. i only cleaned the dodgy side so far, to have a look at the valve going to get a spring compressor and get it out, but I'm gguessing it's shagged.
