That looks fantastic Paul, I was trying to clean my own clutch case, well the little awkward bits that the big polishing mop couldn't reach last night with my Dremel and various attachments, it's a monotonous job. PS Do you do an exchange programme where I send you mine and you send me the one in the photo

To be fair Harold that casing above was in reasonable condition to start with and just dirty with the lacquer gone off. But it did come up very well. I am nearly at a point where I would be happy to do other work, but I am still waiting for the other machine to be installed. This one is probably more like what a lot are like. The black corrosion and dirt will come off, but it is also scratched and damaged. Today's job....

With winter coming on, I want to refurb my carbs and get my crankcase and rockers cover polished and re-lacquered. Am I right in thinking that is the correct finish for a 1981 CB400n(b?) with frame no. 2202464 with red petrol tank and plastic?

That is very similar to the condition of mine Paul including the gouges, I have polished mine and to be honest will probably leave the marks as they are. It would be hard to file/sand these down and then polish it without it being evident as they are right on the edge of the circular part. I suppose it depends on the level of finish your after but to me if it's a rider then marks like that form part of the bikes history. I think people have to be realistic about how much blasting can do, its a blasting cabinet not a magic wand. But to me that part polished up would still be very acceptable to a lot of people. Keep up the good work Paul it's a pity you live so far away from civilization or I would be round your place with a box full of bits

Maybe try buffing it out? Blast first to highlight the extent of the damage. I'd start with 80 grit on a Da to cut through the damage and then by hand to regain the shape. Work through a couple of grits to maybe 400 and blast again to even out the finish. That's what I do when polishing scratched/pitted parts and it usually works out ok. I'd be interested to see the results on the scratched case.
Again, I'm blown away with the results you've achieved on those carbs. Top job!
