More playing today. I think I got carbs sorted- need to be done quite gently but they do come up well...

The carb does look good Paul, I wonder what the best way is to preserve the finish on the carb body?

When freshly done the surface is susceptible to fingermarks- especially smooth finishes but not so much with carb bodies. The recommendation is just to silicon spray them. If I remember my college metallurgy- doesn't aluminium form an oxide layer that then protects it from further corrosion? They were never treated from new so I guess you would have to redo them every 30 years or so....

I was thinking along those lines myself Paul, the would eventually lose some of the brightness and look more of an "original" finish. With the tops polished and maybe the float bowls as well, I think they would end up looking very, very good indeed. I`ll leave my 250 carbs stripped down ready for when you open for business.

After this process, to achieve OEM finish for the Superdream carb tops I guess they could be wet and dried? - Finer grade by grade and then a good polish with solvol and wire wool - then clear lacquer if desired - much as the OEM look on the fork bottoms and engine casings. Interesting how CB250/400T dream carbs never had the polished tops but CB250/400N did:

looking at the bodies of those carbs Nick ,i think the cleaned ones would soon take on a similar appearance,as they oxidised.
what was the finish on the float bowls?

Just as the bodies mate - not polished.

I have a poorly set of carbs that could do with the Crouchy treatment!

It's gone a bit quiet! How are you getting on with your new toy? The results look great. Is the machine large enough to deal with lacquered engine cases?
