Hi folks, as post title says bike has no Vin Plate. Can see the engine number, is the frame number on there somewhere? Is a Vin Plate necessary, can they be gotten hold of?
Cheers

Cheers Frame number should be stamped on the headstock of the frame. I know some of the guys have bought replica VIN plates on ebay and the seller has added the numbers. Seem to be a good replica. DVLA says " All vehicles registered in the UK must have a unique, stamped-in vehicle identification number (VIN)" so, yes you will need one. I would add some pics of mine for reference but the image hosting is still down!

So here's the headstock, looks like the vin plate is there for some reason.
Best options for getting that paint off without damaging vin plate?

I've never seen it put there on the 'N' (but maybe abroad?) before but the rivets look like original. But, my God, who in their right mind slaps all that paint everywhere? And what paint it is? Hammerite springs to mind. Most of the paint stripper from the diy sheds is absolutely useless at taking paint off but with continued applications may be a gentle way of exposing that VIN plate without too much damage. As I am a thug, I'd attack it with a stanley blade to scrape/slice the paint off. I can be impatient . Can always get a replacement plate. Do you have a V5 for it? It would be interesting to see what it says the engine and frame numbers are and could shed a bit of light.

I have the V5 in my name. Model is CB250ND-B, September 1982. Frame No:CB2502208510, can't verify this till I get all that mad paint off. Engine number is not a match, on V5 CB250NE-2000752. Engine in bike is CB250NE-2200752.

I've always removed the vin plate before getting the frame blasted, then painting it & never had a problem damaging them. It's fairly easy to file the rivets down enough get them off. I've just used pop rivets to fix them back on, but Silvers did have the proper rivets, don't know the part number though.

It was a pleasant surprise seeing it at all. Be interesting to see what’s under the paint.

I don't think the plate is a requirement for the MOT, it certainly isn't for older bikes. What is needed is a stamped number on the frame that is clearly legible. I just replaced the original battered vin plate on my frame after I had it blasted and coated with one of the replacements, the original rivets I think I got from CMSL I know in the past I had really old bikes MOTed with a simple sticker applied where the stamped number was not visible anywhere on the frame, they just wanted some Ident for ticking the box on the MOT

Not sure if it’s clear in the photo but it does look like the frame number is stamped on the headstock under the vin plate, why the vin pates up there, who knows.
