So here's the vin plate under all that paint. Looks like they've had a go at that as well.
And big thanks to Willy3pigs for the acetone tip. Couple mins soak and paint wiped right off.

So the story goes down hill, that is not even the matching VIN plate for the log book and the plate does not match the stamped frame number by the 5th digit from the right
Out of interest what does the back of the plate look like

the only issue you would have ,if the altered frame number is in the system ie on another bike .do you have a logbook in your name if so you know there is not two bikes sharing the same frame number.the numbers as shown in the pics i would run a mile but you can get a vin plate with whatever number you want and there will be a bike dealer that will re stamp your frame and give you written evidence.these bikes have 40 plus years history very few of us know what are bikes have been up to over that time they were cheep sheds to get to work on and road to destruction and kept on the road any means possible.my 400 is just a mashup of parts .i would not bin a perfectly good frame over the issues you have but thats me and dvla will only get upset if its already in the system they do not like twins

I would clean the back with wire wool then take a rubbing and see what it shows - just intrigued

Yeah see what you're saying Mark. For now it all rests with the engine, I'm hoping to get the head off this weekend and see what news that brings, not very optimistic at the moment but if it checks out ok I'll go again from there.

I'll do that Pete and post a pic, see what it uncovers.
