I don't think the plate is a requirement for the MOT, it certainly isn't for older bikes. What is needed is a stamped number on the frame that is clearly legible. I just replaced the original battered vin plate on my frame after I had it blasted and coated with one of the replacements, the original rivets I think I got from CMSL I know in the past I had really old bikes MOTed with a simple sticker applied where the stamped number was not visible anywhere on the frame, they just wanted some Ident for ticking the box on the MOT I once asked an MOT man to take a rubbing, as in place a piece of paper on it and shade over with a pencil, thick tw*t attacked it with sand paper and took my freshly painted frame back to bare metal. I didnt go there again

Just to add to the post. Just got my Hawk/Dream frame delivered. The vin plate on that is on the headstock. Strange. Gee

I’ve just been having a go at this with 400 wet & dry. Not sure, should I continue? Maybe remove it and submerge it in something? Would appreciate any suggestions, thanks.

I would carefully drill the heads of the rivets and remove the plate, then soak the plate in either acetone (nail varnish remover) or paint thinners, whichever of those that comes to hand should do the trick within minutes.

Thanks Willy. Acetone on the shopping list. Seems a good option.

You are likely to have a fairly knackered vin plate there. I found a falla on ebay that made me a new one for about twenty quid a while back. Depends how fussy you feel like being.

I’d be comfortable enough replacing it, but would like to get the info off the old one.

I would take the ViN plate off
It is riveted on with Pop rivets - Honda used hammer rivets
It is in the wrong place - is the plate hiding the real frame number and the bike is a ringer
Sorry to say that but in my opinion needs doing
If it is a ringer technically no insurance will be valid

I think you're right Pete. Something dodgy going on. Got vin plate off and rubbed down the paint. Looks like someone's tried to stamp a number on top of the original. V5 frame no ends in 8510, looks like that's what they were going for.
So What Now?

Most of us on here have a storage space filled with Superdream bits. The good news is that you have just accelerated yourself into this members enclosure. The bad news is, you need another frame and V5. Many superdream owners of old, seem to have been master bodgers and dishonest bastards. My advice would be to continue with the restoration one part at a time, whilst looking out for a bargain. Given that the engine is producing swarf, a bike with an engine would be what I would look out for. A weak spot on the frame is the swinging arm, but almost everything else is fixable, and you have spares. The second bike I was restoring had the same problem with a ground off engine number, so I get how you feel. You are about to become a Superdream expert. Relax and enjoy the trip. 👍

Interested to know if the engine number matches the engine number on log book. And has the engine number stamped on the engine been messed with (altered like the frame)?
Wondering if your engine is from the unknown frame number, or correct to the v5
And I assume that the dodgy frame number on the head tube matches the v5.
Have you looked up the reg. to see when it last had a mot, will only show online if it had a mot after 2005.
I don't know how long you have owned it but I'd ask who you bought it off what they know
