I've always removed the vin plate before getting the frame blasted, then painting it & never had a problem damaging them. It's fairly easy to file the rivets down enough get them off. I've just used pop rivets to fix them back on, but Silvers did have the proper rivets, don't know the part number though. Just seen that, something funny going on there too

Looking at the frame no of the one on the bike First digit would be a 2, the only other possibility would be a 3 but it’s unlikely to be a German frame Second digit is either 0 if it was an N frame, 1 if it was an NA frame or 2 if it was an NB frame We can see 3rd digit was a 1, others not readable The frame number on the log book you have is CB250-2208510 which is an NB frame The engine no is CB250NE-2200752 (NB engine no) but log book says CB250NE-2000752 (N engine no) - I would recommend you recheck the engine no on the bike The frame number for the 2 engine nos above CB250NE-2200752 frame number from experience would be in range CB250NE-2200722 to CB250NE-2200777 CB250NE-2000752 frame number from experience would be in range CB250NE-2000722 to CB250NE-2000777 Neither are within the tolerance of the frame no on the log book so I would conclude this is NOT the original engine for the frame no on the log book but the data has been updated in the log book I would also conclude that this engine is NOT the one originally supplied by Honda in the frame (with mutilated number) you have as It should have a 1 in it on the 5th last digit

Wow that's some great info Pete thanks for taking the time to put that together.

Most of us on here have a storage space filled with Superdream bits. The good news is that you have just accelerated yourself into this members enclosure. The bad news is, you need another frame and V5. Many superdream owners of old, seem to have been master bodgers and dishonest bastards. My advice would be to continue with the restoration one part at a time, whilst looking out for a bargain. Given that the engine is producing swarf, a bike with an engine would be what I would look out for. A weak spot on the frame is the swinging arm, but almost everything else is fixable, and you have spares. The second bike I was restoring had the same problem with a ground off engine number, so I get how you feel. You are about to become a Superdream expert. Relax and enjoy the trip. 👍
Thanks Duffer some good advice. I'm still thinking about how to proceed, won't be giving up.

So the 4th digit from the right was a 7, see the shaping of the photo of the 7 below and the 3rd from right pretty sure is a 1 That would make the number

Is the 450 and 250 frame identical 450dx I think is similar enough that you could easily build a superdream into one, theres the oil cooler mounts on the front down tube but I think everything else is more or less the same, some of the old 250/400 dream lugs might not be there? but they arent needed for an SD. probably Johnf's area tbh

Firstly, thanks for all the help and advice it’s much appreciated. So current frame is basically scrap if I want to be road legal. I’m thinking I’ll carry on and see if I can get it running, so I’ll do a top end strip asap and hope for good news there. If it’s positive news engine wise I’ll look to source another frame with a V5. A thought occurs to me, going by what’s happened with the frame is there a chance the engine came from a “dodgy past”? Can I run the engine number somewhere to make sure it’s all ok. Don’t want to do any work only to find out I can’t use it on the next V5. current engine number.

I feel for you on what's happened but you're doing what I'd do too. Look at the positives, there's enough there to build up onto a different frame. And you'll get the experience of stripping that engine down. At least the number doesn't look tampered with!
You'll know what to look for on a new frame, the plate on the downtube and number stamped into the headstock. Confirm they match with each other and the V5.
I was lucky buying my 250 unseen on eBay. I had a decent seller that was willing to communicate and confirmed the frame number and engine number for me. I knew the engine was wrong for the bike as it was a kicker engine. The number is also different to the V5. Not a big problem to me. Hardest part was getting it from Glasgow! Total outlay was £450, that's £350 for the bike and £100 courier on shiply.
As well as eBay, look on Facebook for the frame/V5. There's a few SD groups on there as well as classic jap bike groups. I'm sure the kind members here will keep a look out too.
Good luck.

Exactly right Andy, thanks. I can still get on with things and if the engine can be made good I don’t see it as too bad an issue. Seems to be frames out there that are not excessively pricey and I’ll have a ready made template for swapping things over.
As I see it this is what you take on or you’d just shell out a bit more and get one that’s been restored.
Cheers

It’s the right decision and a hard lesson
I suspect the engine no wrong on the log book is a clerical error by DVLA or historical owner
Would not worry about engine fairly easy to get the new frames log book updated with your engine no
