It's probably important not to miss the original point of the question. I agree this bike could never replace a Superdream in terms of build quality or classic looks. What it did seem to do is take over from the CB450DX (which also replaced the Superdream in the market) as a reliable no thrills commuter, doubling up as a learner machine - of course even though times changed in terms off cc from a 250cc learner machine to being able to be used in circumstances as a 487cc machine in the learner respect. It is also an enjoyable fun ride. This is the type of bike you don't ever really need to sell as it wouldn't really be worth selling, once the cosmetics are tidied (not expensive if you know how to do it). It rides excellent, has a decent turn of speed when required and does what it says on the tin - you can leave it parked up knowing it will be there when you return. It will never win any style awards but that said, the motor sounds great. It has a typical nineties look to it. I picked up this example yesterday.......check out the miles it had done two years ago on that MOT certificate.

looks a nice bike, are you keeping it as it is, or removing the fairing.

I've got some really tidy bits to convert it back to naked (headlamp etc) but for now I think I'll leave it on. As Dave says, if I am going to use this one for a bit of a commute it may be worth leaving it on.

Nice one Nick I would leave it as it is as well I think it looks OK with the fairing and it will perhaps help protect the vulnerable finish a little. If well looked after and maintained I'm sure it will serve you very well. Health to ride.

No not at all.
I think one GS500E thread in around six thousand Superdream ones is not overkill.
But you pays your money.......

I think it looks a lot better with the fairing on, especially with the twin lights, it's funny that you mention about the cb450DX, I was looking at one recently it has an oil cooler, but appears to more less have the SD400 engine. Just wondering can you advise me on how the Honda CB450DX compares with the SD400 in term of build quality of both engine and chassis, are there any week points with them

I've seen the CB450DX do some seriously high mileages for a 450/500 class of bike, much like the GS500E.
The CB450DX was built in Brazil and as far as I am aware, build quality was not as good as anything built in Japan but still good - for a bike to cover 70,000 plus miles is testimony in itself.
Never a fan of the 450DX styling (rectangle front headlamp etc) but if I wanted a commuter bike and could find a good one now I would buy one.

Tanks Fungo, I agree the SD styling is much better, I will leave THE 450DX where it is, just curious why they added an oil cooler, did the engine need it?

This bike is shaping up to be a good usable (and now retro) 1990's classic...... Might be a bit too modern for some of you old farts but please bear with us.
