It seems obvious that SD wheels have all but dried up - especially the rears. Surely we can find someone to re-create this original finish on used wheels in order to bring them back like NOS? There are a lot of firms out there, maybe we need to approach some. You cannot easily dismantle a Comstar and I'm not a fan of painting this version - I know the job is not easy. It appears to be a brushed /polished alloy finish and then lacquered over from new. Any thoughts ideas are welcome as always. Typically Used (shed loads out there in this kind of nick) : To this:

I havent seen a new or NOS comstar wheel since 1982 FB - I cannot remember exactly WHAT the finish was...
I am sure that paint wasnt involved, although I could be wrong on that score re the spokes themselves. But I do remember the rims as being brushed and laquered. Might be able to achieve that finish by mounting the wheel on a spindle and getting it to revolve somehow (using a drill/pad against the rim???)and holding a scourer or (damn - cant remember the name of the things...green, plasticky wire wool type!!!) against the rim.
Needs looking in to.............

I do have a NOS one Carl....a front one. It's not paint but a weird lacquer.
Agree needs looking into.
By the way, decals are hopefully moving forward - just fighting for time at the minute.

LOL... Do you think the wheels are Diamond Cut? Does anyone know what I mean by that?

LOL... Do you think the wheels are Diamond Cut? Does anyone know what I mean by that? Where the wheel is machined to a shiny finish, then lacquered over? I don't think Comstars are diamond cut tbh, they have a slightly matt finish - they'd be shinier if they were diamond cut. In terms of getting Comstars rebuilt/refurb'd, I read somewhere once that Hagon do them (or at least they did do) - it stuck in my mind because I always thought of Hagon just doing shocks/suspension

Refurbishing is one thing..........pulling it apart to do a thorough job is something entirely different.
To get the finish exactly the same as they were new - ie the burnished appearance to the rim - will require the comstar spokes to be removed.....it cant be done any other way.
Looking at FB's photo of a NOS one above, it is clear that the burnishing and laquering of the rim is done prior to the spokes and hub being fitted.

I can't see any company being willing to dismantle and rebuild these wheels as Honda expressly forbid it and in this world of where there is blame there is a claim, the company would leave themselves wide open should anything untoward happen. Personally I don't see why they couldn't be rebuilt as they are just held together with rivets and bolts, but you may struggle to get the wee H imbossed on the rivets again after rebuilding and there are so many grades of rivets out there how do you know which one to get. The finish I think would be almost impossible to replicate as well as it looks like raw aluminium which has been pressed and which I would imagine is anodised which means if you sand, polish it or whatever you are removing the anodised service and would then need to reanodise it to get it back to anything near original. I remember reading in one of the magazines that some guy rebuilt Comstars for a project but they were for a wee 50cc so he had been willing to take the chance.

Interesting point H... The one that Nick posted in the top pic, doesn't look too bad. The main thing that seems to let it down is the rusty bolts in the centre of the wheel. Would it be possible to change them one-by-one without ruining the integrity of the wheel? As for the wheel itself, if it was mine, I'd have dabble at bathing it in Gunk, then Paraffin, then a spell in the dishwasher (it it fits), and then polish the rim up. But that would only work if the finish wasn't duff on the wheel, in which case we're back to square one...
