Fill the tanks with metho? Is that methylated spirit? I bought a litre today - thought I'd get some good stuff in for Christmas . Not really, I got it to do a final flush of my CB500 tank before I pour in the tank sealer. Edit - changed 'no' to 'know' Doh! Ian , I thought mets was slightly greasy, accetone would be better for your tank degreasing or even paint thinners if you can get hold of some,

Why Jack Daniels? I know it isnt to everyones taste (mine included) but it does seem like an expensive way of losing money...... You really don't like JD, Carl?
I have heard it's nice and can keep rust at bay.
Like most things American, to me it is just a cheap imitation......... I prefer a well distilled scotch whiskey....................and I would rather it was in MY tank than the bike's!!!

I like a drink but I can't stomach any whiskey/bourbon tastes. I do envy my in-laws though as they both are whiskey drinkers and they really do get pleasure from relaxing with an edradour on an evening.

Turpentine leaves the oily residue.

I go up to Grantown on Spey every year to see my old man (have met him 7 times now ) so we call into the brewery at Pitlochry and pick them up a bottle. I wish I could join in the enjoyment but it makes me wretch. it's not pretty.

I feel for you mate - that is a shame as it really is like having your throat kissed by a Geisha.....smooth as silk, tender and with a hint of promise!!!!!

There's a couple of items of interest in this months Classic Motorcycle Mechanics. First up, as mentioned elsewhere, Scott's SS50s in 'Show us Yours', well done Scott! Also, there's a short article on engine prep, painting & polishing by Briteworx, in which he says they charge up to £400 to prepare an engine to show standard. There's photos of some completed engines, and one of him working on one on the bench - a SD engine no less. So who's building a bike up to this standard......And, back to this thread, there's an article on winter lay-up, including a bit on modern petrol. The gist of this is the best thing to do, especially if you intend to use the bike now & again, is to fill up with Aspen - but we already knew that didn't we They give using a fuel preservative as an option, along with draining the tank & spraying it with 'GT85' inside. I've gone the draining route with my 400NA, but when I looked at this GT85, which I'd not come across, it's some form of penetrating oil. So wouldn't any thin oil do? Finally, the worst thing you can do, is fill it with pump petrol.

Firstly, well done Scott.....will get a copy and have a butcher's hook.
Secondly, I have a can of GT85......it's a bit like WD40 is it not? It says on the can that it's a water displacer with PTFE in it? It certainly smells just like WD40.

Not paid much attention to problems that modern fuels cause,to me I can't see why you'd want to go to the extremes of coating tanks/sticking Aspen in etc. never had any issues with fuel at all all I do through winter is stick bikes in dry garage and start them and ride them when I get chance depending on weather and road conditions, can't see difference in running/refilling when in use and storing

I used GT85 instead of WD40 a few years back through the winter as halfords had it on special offer - I didn't like it though and went back to WD. It just wasn't as good at stopping corrosion.
My SS50 tank is drained of petrol at the moment and I poured in about 3-400 ml of WD40 and just shake it about every so often.
