That's shocking! And worrying at the same time. :-(

Are you sure that is not an army bike that has suffered bullet holes out in Iraq or some god forsaken place like that, note the mottled kaki colour scheme on the petrol tank.

I recently found a tank from a SD in same condition when I rubbed the paint down to bare metal, our own Harold was going to buy the tank but I thought it wise to rub it down, the tank had no fuel in it but hadn't been used for many years

I wonder could a modern copy reproduction tank be made for a SD maybe out of stainless steel. You know those sheet metal workshops, would they be capable of making a copy !

So what are we all going to do for the time being as a practical solution? I went into my garage tonight and the stench of corroding metal was in the air..

My thoughts are that the tanks are pretty thin guage metal to start with and if the tanks are left unused for any length of time they will corrode,I don't use my bikes through winter and have never had any problems with fuel going off etc.

Fill the tanks with metho? Is that methylated spirit? I bought a litre today - thought I'd get some good stuff in for Christmas . Not really, I got it to do a final flush of my CB500 tank before I pour in the tank sealer. I wanted something that will evaporate, as it's impossible to get the dregs out of this tank, and also it should absorb any remaining water. It ain't cheap - £2.49 for a litre, not even a cheap drink anymore! I don't know what to do with my other bikes. With Gill out of action following her hip replacements, I can't ride all of them through the winter. If you leave them empty, there's a risk of condensation rusting the bottom of the tank. If you can't use them through the winter, taking the tanks off & storing them upside down in the house seems the safest, although not the most practical. Edit - changed 'no' to 'know' Doh!

I know this could be a daft suggestion.
But over the winter months, what about filling them with Jack Daniels? The Bourbon Drink. Darkish in colour?
Ya or nein?

Why Jack Daniels? I know it isnt to everyones taste (mine included) but it does seem like an expensive way of losing money......

It'd smell nice coming from the exhaust if you could get it to run.

I have heard it's nice and can keep rust at bay.
