hillam imp....engine based on a Coventry climax fire pump engine.....stiletto twin carb hot version model revved to 14k from memory..........the company was nationalized at the time ( as was the british motorcycle industry ) so why oh why didn't they develop this unit as a motorcycle engine, cosmetic tart up and shaft drive would have been a jap competitor/beater......simple ohc water cooled 4 cyl "superbike" in a feather bed frame......lost opportunity, the classic british deases. dejavu...........

My brothers first car was a sunbeam stiletto, it was basically a fastback Hillman Imp. They looked quite similar. I'll try and find a piccy..

Hi. I must confess to cheating a bit. I did a google search. The TV show was Randall & Hopkirk (Deceased). It brings back some memories of my youth. I do remember the series, it ran for a few years I think. It must have been on TV in the late 60's or early 70's from the registration of the car. Mike.

I had a Sunbeam Stiletto in the 70's. I didn't have it long - got it for while my TR6 was off the road for a quick rebuild. I was very nervous of it's reliability problems, but I had no trouble with mine. I sold it to a guy who was going to commute from Hyde to Leeds every day on the M62 - don't know how long that lasted! No pictures of that, but I did find one of my first ever car - a Ford Prefect. Technically far removed from the Stiletto; side valve engine, 3 speed gearbox & vacuum operated wipers that got slower the more you put your foot down! Looks like I thought it was cool though! BTW, you might pass the campsite next weekend - it was in Prestatyn

Hi Ian. Seeing that photo stirred some distant memories. Was that Prefect known as the 100E? I seem to remember the Ford cars given numbers like 100E, 105E and 107E. I think the 107E was the Anglia. Can you remember? Mike.

Right on both counts, Mike. The side valve's were 100E - Prefect 4 door & Popular 2 door, replaced by the ohv 107E Anglia.
