I posted a picture of the new Triumph 400-X Scrambler in my thread on the recent VMCC Hangover Run, this is it Well, today the Street 400 arrived in the dealers, so we went for a look at that. It's a lovely looking bike. There's just a couple of negatives; there's no centre stand and doesn't appear to be any provision for one - no mounting brackets on the frame. I had a sit on it and could just about get my feet flat on the floor, which was a bit of a surprise as the seat height is the same as the Hunter 350 on paper, but I can get my feet flat easily on that. Anyway, definitely a possibility...........

Thanks for the heads up on this Ian. How does it compare with the RE Hunter performance on paper? There does not seem a huge difference in style between the Scrambler and street versions.

It's a bike I was looking forward to arriving , still not seen one in the flesh though . Looks good , I was less keen on the coolant reservoir being between the engine and the sumpguard , fly by wire throttle (but I'd get used to the idea!) and the axle chain adjuster looking like a bit of bent alloy . Performance should be leagues better than the Hunter with 50% more power but perhaps less restful with 10mph/1000rpm gearing as standard . Not rushing to swap the Hunter yet .

I generally stick to cruising around 55 - 60mph on any of my naked bikes including the Hunter - too much wind blast beyond that. I've had the Hunter at just over 70 during a few overtakes & I reckon that's about it sat up on a flat road - maybe a bit more down hill lying on the tank, but not much. The Triumph has similar power to my wife's 400 Kwackers, so I reckon would cruise about 90 if you could hang on, and maybe the magic ton if you were flat on the tank. There's not much difference between the Street & the Scrambler, mainly small cosmetics like the separate pillion seat, headlight grille, exhaust & more significantly the larger wheels which raise the seat height a bit too much for me. I've grown to really like my Hunter 350, so I wouldn't replace it with the Triumph, but the Speed 400 has similar power but less weight compared to my Continental GT 650, so I've sold it to make room for a possible replacement. We'll see.................

Watch this space then Ian is it, will you be able to get a test ride on the Triumph before you potentially buy one

Maybe......possibly.....the current bikes are for potential buyers to see one in the metal & aren't available for a test ride, but will be sold eventually. Jason reckons he'll get a demo bike in a while, but I'm not too bothered - I bought the Hunter without a test ride, couldn't even sit on it, but at least I got to sit on the Triumph & it felt fine. The weight's a bit less & the power considerably more so it would be fine for me. One downside, parts are more expensive than the Enfield - I paid £55 for the Hunter rear rack, a rack for the Triumph is £150

I'm a bit torn now. Looking at the brochure pictures, the red one was my favourite, reinforced when I saw it in the metal, but now he has a blue one in & I think I prefer that But hang on, when I look from another angle I'm back on the red..........

Well. my first bike was a Lambretta LD150, bought for £15 saved up from my Saturday job, just before I left school to start my apprenticeship - couldn't afford a 'proper' motorbike. Six months later I'd saved up £30 & bought a Triumph Tiger Cub. No pictures of that, but some 20 years later I bought another Triumph - a 3TA. It was project & needed a bit of work Only one picture of the rebuild and one nearly there Sold it a few years later to buy a Honda CB750, but here we are, another 25 years on, and at the dealers picking up my 3rd Triumph. Yep, I settled on the red one, got it back home & tucked up in the garage

They are still gritting the roads up here in Glasgow.....we wont be out on any bike until April I would think, all weather dependent of course.
Lovely looking bike, both the blue and red look great.
Enjoy.
Gee.

My first job when I got it home was to wash it - it was mizzling on the way home & the roads were wet & mucky. Think some of that muck was grit from the snow & ice we had yesterday.

A lot of the youtube road testers suggest its performance makes the 400 Triumph more a competitor for the Interceptor than the Hunter. It will be interesting to hear your opinion on that once you've got it nicely run in..

We'll see................. There have been several people on the meteor site on facebook fitting Hunter ECU /throttle bodies to their Meteors and getting them up to 80mph ,a few have also fitted high rise cams from Hitchcocks as well as the ECU and achieving 87 mph (on the GPS not indicated ) You're half way there Ian you just need the cam and your Hunter will fly ,maybe you don't need a Triumph, but then again needing and wanting are'nt the same animal

No need for a cam upgrade on it Tel, the Hunter's a keeper. I can get my feet flat & the weight's low down & less than the SDs The Triumph's an easier to manage replacement for the Enfield 650s which I loved, but were getting a bit heavy for my ageing body

Dunno, still feeling guilty about not going on the 400N last year, especially after I'd been to the Lake District on it a few months earlier 'cos the Hunter was due it's service. On the other hand, the Hunter does 100mpg - double the 400N. Wonder what the Triumph will do..............
