Will check my brand of VHT when I get home tonight but def silver, not aluminium as that my like a grey I think - too dark.
That said, I do dirty mine up silightly to take the edge off the brightness of the silver.
I find that VHT paint in an aerosol is never as tough as the original stuff but even that didn't last long.

That was my thoughts Stevie, leaving the crankcases unpainted and just freshening up the head and barrels, but If there is a very good paint that hardens OK I might paint them.

I have the engine on the bench fordy, I've polished the side covers, and now ready to do the crankcase if I can sort out the best paint for the job. I've got the crankcase cleaned and polished with solvol and wire wool now but a thinking of painting it.

They were certainly painted from new.
I'm convinced mine is Hycote, well the stuff I'm using on my 400.
At uni right now but back later.
I think GrahamB recommended Hycote over Simoniz recently although the black version.

Do you lacquer the crankcases or not?

What colour etch primer is best under the silver on the crankcase?

Bottom of the barrels, basically bottom of engine.

I have used simoniz vht and is washes off with petrol Loz put me onto Hycote engine enamel and it is very good , my engine is black though. I have posted on previous threads that it is available in aluminium/silver also but can't remember anyone ever come back to say if they used it. Here's the product. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HYCOTE-ENGINE-ENAMEL-ALUMINIUM-400ML-SPRAY-PAINT-FREE-TRACKED-POST-/161621247525?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item25a1608625thanks grahamb, is it any good in the barrel and head or vht for them?
