It looks like Hycote is only in black, aluminium, but not silver. it says they are self priming but would you recommend using an etch primer?

Hi wazzbo Yes black and aluminium . not used the aluminium so can't say how it looks. I would recommend using a primer either self etching or I used another Hycote product "adhesion aid" It's good for all the painted areas on the engine , crankcases , head , barrels etc.. No lacquer used or required.

Thanks for the info Graham, I saw the adhesion aid ,do you think it is better than etch primer? I wouldn't say it's better, I rang Hycote technical dept about the fact some products state no primer required and I was not convinced about applying any engine paint to bare aluminium . They recommended I use Adhesion Aid as a primer, worked for me .

I lied - just got back and checked the brand. I am using Carplan Firecote VHT Silver this time.
As I say, when I apply it I like to dirty it down with trim wax - gives a nice aged effect to the fresh silver.
Will crab the camera and show you how far I've got with the 400 engine cosmetics and hope to illustrate what I mean.

Yeah.
To me, it brings it back to the original looking paint which was a bit duller although still very silvery. I hate the engine paint to look too 'white' if that makes any sense?
Have a look at the silver bike on the RHS of the banner and you will kind of get what I mean....or any original literature.
I believe Honda Cloud Silver (NH35M) was the original paint used. Hammerite Silver Smooth is close as well.

Thanks for that Nick, it looks a nice finish, food for thought. My options seem to be your way with the vht or grahams with the hycote aluminium engine enamel, ....hmm. I think I'll get both and do some experiments. Thanks everyone for taking the time to help me with this.

Cheers Fordy,
How you tackle this job is a personal thing - there are many ways to do it and how close you can get to original look is the challenge for me that I enjoy. Without doubt it is best to do it with the engine out but not always necessary.
I don't use a primer either but I do thoroughly degrease everything before painting - and if something looks shoddy in an area, it gets done again. This paint is quite easy to work with.
Some people have the casings blasted.....I think bead blasted and they do look good when this is done as well but a lot more effort - and also remembering that they were painted from new.

I'm not sure how good the carplan is with petrol resistance but if petrol got split, it is easy to re-do - very easy to work with this paint.

Would it not be easier with brush on rather than spray and save all that masking?

By the way, I have also used hycote clear VHT lacquer over the top of what you see above - I just recalled I did this. I think it will help with the petrol resistance and as per Graham and Loz's recommendations of the product.
