I notice there are two types of collector boxes, one being quite bulbous and the other which is made partly of a rectangular section tube, would one be genuine Honda and the other be an aftermarket part or did different models have different boxes.Mike

The bulbous One is genuine but be careful as there is a pattern One about that looks genuine but isn't. A genuine one should be stamped Sankei.

Just to add a further iron into the fire.....
I recently picked up a genuine CB450DX item but upon inspection it did not have the internal gubbins that the SD had.
It is so true that you never stop learning until you die.

MC0 (middle part number) is officially the CM450C.
Every one of these that I've seen does indeed have the internal gubbins - thus is identical to CB250/400/T/N etc

Am I right in saying that if you have a two-into-one exhaust then you don't need a collector box ?

They will also run on a twin exhaust without a collector ,though I understand they lose some of the top end power wise

I am assuming that the collector is the cross pipe thing that joins the two exhaust pipes together, I don't see what purpose it serves other than cosmetic, as the smoke is still going to go out the nearest exhaust anyway !

au contraire mon ami......
The GENUINE Honda collector box has baffles inside which 'swirl' the exhaust gasses, slow them down, and give some 'back pressure' to the combustion chambers. The engine power and flow was designed to work with a certain amount of back pressure and, without it, the engine will not produce the same power.

Smoke?? It's a "power chamber" according to Honda. Exhaust design can make or break a bikes performance- ask the 2 stroke guys. A lot of bikes had/have interconnecting exhausts- a 4-1 is basically just that. Usually helps low revs breathing, but it's all tied in with the design of the stroke, bore, pistons, valves, inlet tracts, etc. etc. Engine designers tweak it all to get a better performing engine. For us it makes a difference to the sound, which I suspect was also Honda's secondary goal. Less of a BLATT-BLATT and more of a blattchuff-blattchuff from a 360 twin....

Found It! From a Honda mag advert for the CB250NDX-B- which was a very, very similar bike to ours....
