I am in the process of reinstating a 2 into 2 exhaust system. I bought a replica collector box from Classic Bike Spares but unfortunately the heat shield screw holes on one side are not in line and lower down than the other side. Paul Crouch (who presumably is the former member known as crouchyuk?) has offered a refund but made the comment that "others have managed to fettle everything to fit" when there has been the same problem.
What might make it hard to "fettle" is that I bought a set of heat shields off good old ebay but they don't look right. They do not have the angle in them which most seem to have and certainly aren't original even though that's what listing claimed. This heat shield just about fits ok on the side where the holes are in the correct place but not on the side where they are in the wrong place. At least they are nice and shiny!
My question is has anyone bought one of these from Classic Bike Spares and got the heat shields to fit? Alternatively, are there any other replica box suppliers out there which have a better fit? The H shape pattern ones on ebay look pretty naff and the authentic ones look past it or far too expensive for their condition.
Paul.

Paul. Hi Paul I am looking to order one of these and other bits from David Silver's . If that's of any use. Regards Graham

It’s a shame you are not over in the U.S for a holiday, Paul.
So far, I’ve picked up three genuine good solid used collector boxes for under £50 since being here in August.
I’d gladly let you have one for what I paid but I think the postage cost to the U.K would make it prohibitive. It’s an option though I suppose.

Thanks Graham and Fungo.
When you get one from DS, it would be very useful to hear whether it is any good or not. It looks identical to the one I bought from Crouchy and I wonder if they are from the same source. Indeed, they are a very similar price although there was no postage charge for the one I got.
Fungo, very kind offer and my wife would love a holiday in the US but not sure she would appreciate lugging back a collector box! However, she's got too many cruises lined up at the moment. Yes, the postage costs to and from the US are ridiculous especially for anything over 2kg which it obviously is.
Out of interest, how do I access German ebay and translate it? I did French and Latin at school but not German ! Paul

Thanks for that, Ian. I vaguely remember reading all this and wish now I had reread it before I embarked on the conversion from motad to 2 into 2. If I had, I don't think I would have bothered! I'm not very comfortable about cutting and grinding as others seem to be. Certainly, it has proved to be far more expensive that I realised.
The issue with the head shields is that the heat shield must be some sort of generic thing (I will be taking this up with the seller as he claimed it was original!) but the main issue is that the screw holes on the box are not in line. On one side they are in line and about 2 cms from the bottom seam but on the other side, one hole is about 1.5 cms and the other about 1 cm from the seam. Paul

Hi Level are no longer supplying silencers so I very much doubt they are behind this current batch of collector boxes that have flooded the market this past year.
They also used to make good quality gear, can’t see a defect such as this one slipping through their quality controls?
I am of the opinion that these are being made abroad possibly in Thai or China.

On my new box from Silver one side has off set mountings for the heat shield . on the left from the seam to the center line of the screw hole they are both 28mm on the right , the front one is 25mm and the rear one is 22mm. The problem with the fit is ,the header at the box end is too big for the bore of the gasket by about 0.1mm (0.004") which is enough to slit the gasket. I ground the pipe end last time. I intend making some heat shield at some point later in the year, so will make them to fit. (time will tell) Regards Graham
