This is great news & is rolling 40 years so as soon as bike gets to 40 years old no MOT which will coincide with zero tax, this should make the prise rise a little of 40 year old vehicles

I hope that is true, I always enjoy doing the tax for my stepthrough because it doesn't cost anything, not long to wait until the SD will be tax exempt (unless they change the rules again before then...). Hopefully people will still keep their old vehicles roadworthy though.

And there lies the danger...surely a vehicle over 40 years old should need some kind of safety test? There are Darwin Award candidates out there that will ride or drive any old shit that is a death trap. Don't think it's a great idea personally. No road tax...fine. No MOT, dodgy imho.

Most but not all I know classic car/bike owners are mechanicly minded and know every nut and bolt on their vehicles so no MOT is fine for me.There's nowt stopping the mechanicly inept still having an mot done as a precaution if they want to.Happy days indeed

I read some comments on this change- that some insurance companies are insisting on either an engineers report or.... surprise surprise an MOT test before they will insure the old stuff?

That bikes over forty years old will be exempt from needing an mot from next year. Only if 100% original and unmodified mind. Anyone with a modified bike/bobber/ chop etc should be VERY careful before registering as a VHI.

That is correct regarding a "radically" changed machine but Tritons/TriBsas etc. ok.The latest trend for bobbers/choppers/flat trackers etc. may be excluded,assuming they're still around at 40 years which a lot will

I haven't got involved in the motorcycle side of things yet, spent too much time this morning worrying about 4 wheeled stuff so not sure what's what yet. The exact criteria to qualify as radically altered is changing but hasn't yet been confirmed as far as i can see. One worrying thing though for example, is a 15% power increase over standard will bump a vehicle out of historic. If that just means tax and MOT every year then that's not a problem. Compulsory MSVA or BIVA and possible re-registration is a different matter though.
