Interesting, we don't have an MOT for motorcycles at all in Ireland. When this was mooted for introduction some years ago, it was discovered that there was no statistical evidence to suggest there was a serious problem with the lack of road-worthiness of motorcycles and I'm sure this would also be the case in the UK, which kinda knocks the argument that people would be riding around on death traps if there was no test. When I lived in Herts I had two bikes that had to be tested every year, and that was a pain in the behind, I now have nine bikes in the garage and this would be a nightmare, not to mention cost a fortune, to try and keep them all with an up to date MOT. www.irishexaminer.com/ireland/compulsory-motorcycle-nct-tests-plan-rejected-by-eu-and-ireland-233162.html

Sorry guys but I am going to disagree with what I think is the consensus on here. Most of you are on here because you have one or more old motorcycles that you obviously care about and wish to maintain in good order. But for every one of us on here there are plenty of people who would just drive around with no brakes and oil pouring from every orifice. Like others have said, I also like the craic of going in the bike shop, mooching around the workshop and the sales area with Nigel and his team and shooting the breeze for an hour. I also like a second opinion that my bike is safe to ride. Each to his own, but if it becomes optional, I for one will still go every year. And it's still only 30 quid.....good value for peace of mind. After all, we're only here once!

I did that with my BSA and Triumph but after 2 years stopped as I knew more about the bike than the MOT tester

The mot test is not proof of roadworthiness,it's just a basic test to see if your brakes, lights, and horn work oh and it costs you £30.Good riddance to it.

I didn't say it was. but you missed out lots of other stuff like Wheel bearings, tyres, head bearings..chain and sprockets...maybe your tester is just not as thorough as mine..or maybe his coffee is not as good?..😜 Its just an opionion guys, we all have one.

Mine even has the seat off to check for rot and the plank out for wheel alignment Never had that - My MoT tester is thorough but not to that level of detail Raised a point that my seat won't come off without removing the rear rack and swinging it up - the way my tester bounces up and down on it if any rot was set in the bike would fall in half
