Whilst sorting out the front brake on my 400NA tonight, I left the 250 deluxe ticking over and revved up as I do every week to get her warm....and more to the point - it burns off this evil modern ethanol fuel - so it's not left in the carbs. But tonight something changed. I don't normally get her into the red line but sometimes I do.....but only for a second or two max. Tonight I instantly noticed a change in her sound as she was very warm but into the red for a second..........and more tappety now. Thoughts? Has a tappet come loose?

Could be worth busting out the feeler gauge to check, uncommon to come loose but I'd check. Is the sound definitely top end?

Had the rocker cover off this morning - a tappet has come fully off - tappet and nut was found in the top end. I'd upload pictures when I can find my phone.

That was lucky Nick, saved a lot of hassle trying to find the nut in the bottom end. How is God's name does this happen though, Dave? The nut was resting on the top the the camchain tensioner. Can't find my bl**dy feeler gauge now....have to get to Halfrauds before they shut.

Great you found out before proper damage occurred

Well FB, at times like this we can be thankful for small mercies. No damage was done and the nut was having a siesta on the cam chain tensioner. Things could have been much worse.

I know no spark issues have been done to death on the forum. When I have more time I will do the usual swap outs of coil, CDI and checking other connections etc. But just to pre-empt my worst fear. Never removed an SD genny before. I have a NOS one in the wings if it is found to be a generator issue. So a quick question to the wise. Can you remind me the method for getting at the generator?

Quite easy to replace the stator in theory. Undo the rotor bolt and use the rotor puller tool to remove the rotor from the taper. Undo the 3 crosshead screws that are not painted yellow on the stator. Then disconnect the stator wiring plugs and pull the stator off. The new one is then put on. It can be difficult to hold the rotor while the centre bolt is undone. There is a special tool to hold the rotor,so I have been told. Fortunately I had access to an impact wrench but of course you need to hold the rotor to torque the bolt when you put it back together.I can't rememberthe exact torque figure but it's in the manual. The stator can be tight to pull off and may need some care to prevent damage. Thats all I can think of at the moment Good luck

Just remembered the fixed pulser.it's fixed by 2 crosshead screws on the 400, guess it's the same on the 250
