Hi, My sd died, overnight.....No spark, turns over, lights etc all ok. I have been through the threads on here, I have a spare coil and CDI but both are unproven. I have tried all 3 combinations of old part/replacement part but nothing. Is there really no way to test these parts without trying them on a running bike?

No easy way of checking the CDI in my opinion and resistance checks of the coil can be misleading too - check the simple stuff like cut out switch first - remove the black white wire under the tank so you know nothing is earthing out the ignition . If you have a multi meter check the alternator too - drive.google.com/file/d/0B0BD_MkiU7Jpb1VXYXNqMTRmdTQ/view?pli=1When you get chance get your spare CDI and coil on a running bike so you know their status .

Hi Bojer. I tried the kill switch first off, changed the coils and CDI's around cleaning all the contacts as I went but still nothing. Thanks for the link but it is for the 250, are these interchangeable between the 250 and 400's?

Had a similar problem, it was not a major component, it was a connection in the left hand electrical panel in the end.
The CB400N has the Hitachi Geni & CDI. (Let my spare 400 CDI go a couple of years ago, since I've only CB250N engines)

Thanks for the link but it is for the 250, are these interchangeable between the 250 and 400's? So in a nutshell.....the coil is the same on 250 and 400 models.....and for the record, it is also the same on all Superdream and Dream models, 250 and 400. The CDI's you have to be more careful with. The 250 Superdream utilised a Nippondenso CDI, the 400 a Hitachi item. A lot of bike breakers don't really understand this and will sell you a CDI 'fit' for 250/400 Superdream - so be careful out there!!! At least you are a snake - if you get stung you can bite 'em back.

Ah, right, so the coil is compatible but the CDI is a Nippondenso so is a no no. Is there anyone who would be able/willing to test these parts for me for a crossing of palm with silver? or has a CDI for sale/hire. Was off for a ride this weekend with my son (CBR125r) so it would be good if there is a way to get this sorted.

So, died overnight, probably cdi as this has happened before!
You have the resistance matrix for the genny and cdi?? ,as well as red neon plug caps or similar to "see" HT, a multimeter to see resistance and outputs, and a flywheel "extractor bolt".
Some have used the oil filter bolt but beware that although the size and thread are the same, the filter bolt wall thickness means that the face that butts up against the crank end is small, meaning that the butt face sits on the taper, and may cause the thin bolt wall to split or burst, meaning a new "can of worms".

Read in your intro, she has been playing up, starts fine, runs well until warm/hot, then will not rev over 4/5 k revs ish?? and/or starts fine but wont rev at all well, very poor power and exhaust front pipes "glow"?? feels like a fuel problem ( which she also may/will have ) bit isnt, now she is dead.
Get matrix info as a starting point, 250 cdi will allow eng to run but not very well at all.
Speedshop do a 400 cdi unit which seems fine, been on lads 400 for some time now.

I think all the OP's questions were answered Rich- are you offering to test his ignition parts?

if need be, but since his quieries have been answered, the acid test is using them on his bike?

No censorship evident on this site.
Surely the OP could email you (Rich) should he should feel the need to?
I don't see grounds for such comments.
