The tensioner spring is hardly up to the job and often doesn`t tension the chain enough, it s not a bad idea to press gently on the top of the tensioner with a screwdriver as you tighten the tensioner nut.
What mileage has it done?
If its done more than about 20 k I would replace the camchain, anyway.
I wound off the tappets so the camshaft wasn`t under tension, but setting the valve timing is easy so no i didn`t lock the valve gear
It took around an hour to do the job
yes timing chain rattle can be common ,if you neglect to check the tension
balance chain rattle is also very common on these bikes, when out of adjustment, that rattle is in the crankcase area,

Collected the bike tonight. has slight rattle of some sort which I guess is the timing chain. had a 70 mile ride home, like being 70 again. good acceleration up to 70, seems to struggle to hold it on any incline though. Perhaps some of the horses have escaped over the years!
