thats the spirit, dont let this bike beat you!!
but you must establish all is ok with the valves, they can and do stick, open usually, but if ignored you will turn this engine into junk, so be warned.

So I've had a stroke of luck, or so I hope, but now I'm afraid I need some advice again. Last week I had been considering whether this bike needed too many parts for my wallet, and was spending an evening in front of the internet, totalling up a rough cost for all the bits that I was just aware of, and it was a pretty daunting. I was about to shut the laptop down and call it a night, when I noticed an auction on eBay for a bunch of Superdream stuff up for bids just up the road from me. The starting bid was £100. Anyway, long story short, I won it last night for that amount with no other bidders, and collected all the various parts today. Well I say parts, but it included a frame and an engine with the corresponding logbook. I now have black side panels and rear cowling, proper front mudguard, speedo cable, rear brake carrier and shoes, rear wheel spindle, usable front and rear tyres, electrical panel with rectifier, solid swing arm, front caliper, rear indicator, headlight and fork stanchions without sheared off nuts in them. There's two sets of earlier Comstar wheels, not the reverse ones, the triple tree, two exhaust headers, instrument panel, carb bits, air box, rear mudguard and rear light, rear rack. Pus more. So, I have the unfinished '81 bike that is in a severe state of disrepair, fitted with an earlier engine. Not sure what the model is. How would I find out? I also have a matching frame and engine as separates for a slightly earlier '80 CB250N. Frame no: JHMCB250N 2121128. Engine no: 250NE-2212584. What should I do? - Fix up the bike I have with these parts. - Strip both and use the new frame and matching engine. Does it matter? Any advise would be great.

Have this new purchase as your main project.
use your original bike as a donor for the new project. Sorted

Ha , well done , funny how you rarely end up with just one Superdream ! Does look like your latest purchase might be best to base the restoration on .

What engine frame number are you trying to identify as there seems to be quite a few flying around on this thread.
As a quick guide, any eng/frame beginning 200-202 were 1978-80 kickstart models, 210-212 NA (1980-81) models and 220-221 (1981-1983) NB models.
Original fit engine and frame numbers occasionally match but chances are they are typically found to be 1 to 25 out from eachother......the engine generally being the higher number out of the two.

Thanks everybody. Looks like I have a plan then! Next step is to confirm the condition of the two engines!
Sorry Fungobat. I think I've been getting a bit confused. I meant that the engine was not a kickstart and so matched the model of the frame, but it appears it's a later engine from NB. So neither engines come from a '80-'81 NA. Or am I still confused?
Thanks for the info on frame numbers. I've also read the really informative thread on the model identifier, which has helped with identifying the tank and panels as a '80-'81 250NA model, so at least their decals will match.
So am I right in assuming that my first purchase is a real mix of all models, a NA frame with an earlier kickstart engine and Black NDB reverse Comstars?
As I'm building this bike for me as a commuter, how important is it to have all parts from the same model?

Okay so you say your new bike has these credentials:
Frame: CB250N 2121128. Engine no: 250NE-2212584.
Therefore the frame is 1981 CB250NA. The engine is a 1982 CB250NB / NDB.
And yes I'd say your first purchase is a real mix bag of parts from various model years. All the parts are fully interchangeable near enough - if in doubt just run it by us anytime. You should only be concerned if you were aiming for a factory standard rebuild - in that case, then I would make the effort to look for a bike with its factory matching engine and frame. But it should not bother you in this case at all (commuter bike). It can still be very nice....it won't affect the look and feel of the bike.
