Nice selection of bikes you have. Didn't know there was a 250 version of the GB - tasty!

Just out of interest as I am seeing figures of 90mph for factory fresh 250s banded about I'm assuming I should be getting better than 60-65mph?

I'm seeing around 80 - 85 tops on mine & speedos are always just a bit over to make you think your going a bit faster than you actually are I don't think the standard 250 Superdream was ever known as the fastest bike on the road as it had the nickname "wet dream"

Rebore is serious fighting talk and expensive to rip into these engines blindly. Do a compression check- only takes 10 minutes- you might be pleasantly surprised!

Also have you checked the gearing? Standard gearing is quite high revving at speed, so not uncomon to raise the gearing to give easier cruising on flat, level dual carriageway commute. This was the case with my 250, but it made it feel sluggish on the hilly, bendy give & take roads I ride on.

I'd suggest a compression check then a good carb check , clean , overhaul - making sure the right jets are in the right places etc........ Back in the day I used to get an indicated 90 ish from my 250 but the bike was newer and I was lighter then , now I find mine seem to do 70+ quite easily with me sitting upright whereas to get 90 I was flat on the tank etc - too old for that now .

I've a friend trying to convince me to fit 400 cylinders and head as there was a rumour about them in the eighties. I know the carbs aren't right as I have to feather the clutch to get acceleration from standing. I'm hesitant to tear into them myself, in case I screw them up. Top speed is seen in fourth (?), with the bike cruising at 55-60 in top no matter how much I wring the throttle.

You can't fit 400 barrels to a 250 bottom end as the stroke is different - would be too easy ! They are fussy carbs and quite complex but have a look here honda-superdream.co.uk/thread/6595/new-carb-guide after reading that I found a jet to clean I didn't realise existed ! Something not right if it won't pull the higher gears I would have thought , had to take a mate on the back of mine and even with a combined weight of 30 stone it still got into top ok . I'd suggest cheap simple stuff first - always my favourite

Do you mean the forum or superdream ownership Richard? Thinking about it the lack of power in top gear was the same on the last engine so January may have to see a new chain the sprocket set as well as carb investigation.
