On a miserable windy and wet night in Berkshire last night with not the best lighting present, carbs were removed and are currently in my car boot awaiting return to Warwickshire tomorrow.....will open up the bowls when I get home and upload pics....had to cut through the throttle and choke cables to get them off - but these were corroded solid anyhow...so nothing lost. One of the inlet bolts was a bit of a pain as well but came out fine in the end......finally had to drill off the rear clips as these were seized / butchered on the screw heads.
Also drilled out the steering lock.

Good evening Fungo, long time no type... Your mate Daniel must know a friend of mine, Jason Torrance.. Nice to see you've gone for what will probably turn out to be the oldest 400 still extant;- this is hopefully a significant save, & is a little over 500 bikes earlier than my own, still unrestored (but on the road) example.

Hi Brucie. Those names are not ringing true......can you shed more light? It sounds like you may know a bit about this bikes history? Hope you are well, it's good to hear from you.

Nice to be back, Fungo & Terry! -Regarding your eco-warrior mate, If he was at Twyford Down, he's likely to know Jason Torrance, the son of a late friend, who famously shackled himself to the underside of a digger... I regret I know nothing about your new purchase, other than the likelyhood of it being one of the oldest around, judging by the frame number. Mine is 929, first registered December '78 on a 'T' plate. One presumes yours would be 'S' registered.. It seems pretty clear that the 400's didn't sell anywhere near as quickly as the 250's, though considering the latter were learner bikes back then, it's not surprising...

Mmmm, challenging , but looks un messed with , all screws drains etc not rounded off , shame the PO did not spend a couple of quid on a litre of oil spray ? Still then it would be too easy

Just watch the jet sizes in that bank if you were the buyer? Seller has just sold a 20kW 400 that he states he has converted to full power- these carbs might be the originals.... www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CB-400-N-/301780997462

Good point. So you think he may have changed the jets? I could always use the jets from the old ones shown above ?
I was planning to change oil and filter and get some carbs on just to hear her run (as stated before) but I am still conscious of what RGD says about it. Maybe I should just remove the engine now and worry about the condition of it later. The compression appears really good not that I have tested it with a reader - just the usual finger in the plug holes job.

It really does look as though it was only the camshaft that was different....
