Hi,
I have just found this site and am a young fellow of just 78 and am relying on my mate to enter threads etc.
I have owned a 1982 Superdream for about 5 years and am a regular rider with our local Classic bike club attending various shows and weekly ride outs with our group + Donnington Park classic shows each year.
Recently acquired another 1981 Superdream project that is now just about ready for MOT which is booked in for today and whilst she is starting fine and pulling in each gear I am unable to open throttle beyond about 1/4 revs (rev counter cable broken so no accurate figure - sorry) when she goes very sluggish, but pulling out choke and she kicks in great.
Clearly this suggests a fuel issue but what............have stripped and cleaned carbs and petrol tank fully, reset the timing and valve clearances but still she remains the same can anyone suggest further aspects to look at and also advise whether the Keihin CV carb is the correct for this bike also where do I locate what type of carb is actually fitted as I can't find any numbers...................keeping on the carb should there be a rubber diapragm fitted to the top of the slide as some Keihin models show one whilst others don't.
I still intend to try and get to MOT station today but really not sure if I will succeed (club mates will follow with a tow rope)
Derrick

Hi Derrick , Does sound like the "traditional" carb problems , it took me four attempts before I got mine sorted , be preapred for more cleaning - everywhere ! Think a lot of the airways ec are very small diameter and get clogged up quite easily . No rubber diaphragm in these carbs just the good fit between piston and carb body . 250 carbs are Keihn VB30A , 400 VB31A I think - stamped on LH (?) side above float bowl face .

They can be a nightmare to get right, I had to ultrasonically clean mine on my 400 twice before it was running right

Hi Derrick,
Just out of interest, on the left hand side of the carbs (when fitted) just above the float bowl you will see a serial number. As part of that serial number there will be either an A, B, C, D or E in a little box. It will indicate the rough year / model of your carbs.

Make sure the airways under the plastic cover, that's held in with a single screw, you'll see it when you take off the top cover and lift out the vacuum piston.are clear, they were clogged on mine. Dave....

Aye boje, they are a begger to get clean when they've been stood for years. I did mine twice with carb cleaner ,but ended up buying an ultrasonic cleaner and had to do them twice in that before they were working properly.

Also derrick make sure there are no air leaks around the rubber manifolds, they get hard with age and can crack or come away from the aluminium where the bolts go through. Having a spray round them with wd40 while the engine is running, it'll rev up if there are any leaks. Dave....

Wazzbo,
By plastic cover are you referring to the seal (large washer type) between the aluminium piston valve chamber with needle assembly and the carburettor housing - if so mine is rubber or is their something else like a diaphragm if so there isn't one. All airways etc were thoroughly cleaned with carb cleaner and then blown through at least twice so I am pretty confident they are all clear - surely the symptom i.e easy start but requires choke once over 1/4 revs suggest too much air rather than an air flow restriction - air filter was also checked and replaced.
Just a thought is it possible raise the needle to allow greater fuel flow if so how as looking at the assembly I assumed it was a fixed needle and there is no information in the Haynes mannual, which is all I have to go on.
BIG THANKS TO EVERYONE THUS FAR - please keep ideas coming. if I work out how to post picture / attachments I will do so.
Derrick
