Thank you all for the warm welcome. Here is my first SD (as I think you guys call them!). A 1981 250cc Superdream NDB. A bougfht it from a guy on Ebay who had it from new and it unfortunately ended up sitting in his lock up/garage. It was a complete non-starter and needed some fundamental parts to get it to a point where it could possibly fire.

It still has its last tax disk in place- 1986 expiry. I don't doubt thats the last time it was on the road. The bike is in need of a lot of care, but I know Hondas are made of stronger stuff, so I'm hoping I don't come across too many issues. I stripped down the bike a bit, it was easier to do than I thought, I have never worked on bikes so I hope I haven't made any blunders. I know the air filter is a crucial part of the combustion process. After locating the air box I discovered this: The air filter had completely rotted. It was like dust or that florist stuff they put flowers into!!! I spent a couple of hours carefully cleaning the air box and filter bracket parts.

I had spent a good couple of days cleaning out the fuel tank (it had debris but is rust free), I oiled and checked the electrics (from what I thought looked ok!), I bled the front break using a youtube video- that was quite straight forward, I replaced the oil and will replace again very soon, changed the plugs and put a bit of oil down the holes, used some "easy start" stuff in the airbox and carbs and that was it really. And then the really exciting moment, would she run? After spending 100 quid or so on battery and consumables I kept my fingers crossed and put the key in. A turn of the key and the ignition light started glowing- good start I thought! I put the bike into neutral as that wasn't lit and that worked. I pressed the start button and she started to turn! But no fire. I spent around 30 minutes, turns the cylinder whilst in gear and trying to get some fuel into the engine by trying to pull the ceased choke. Eventually she started and fired and spluttered and cut out. I knew at that point th engine was good and it would only get better from there!

The biggest problem I've come up against is a ceased clutch. I know zero about clutches, I'm still try to work out the physics behind them. I have dismantled the whole clutch and carefully taken the discs off in order and cleaned them up in engine oil. I've put them back together with the hope that I can at least get the clutch moving or doing something!! At the moment it doesn't do anything, the cable has been renewed, the clutch lever with the rod seems to go in and out but I just can't work out what that rod is supposed to push in? I either have a part missing (possibly a rod that sits into the middle of the clutch as shown below) or the clutch shaft / tranny is ceased and not working together. Any light you can shed on this would be most welcome. I want to have a little ride but can't without a clutch. Thanks

The clutch rod in the outer case pushes against the bearing shown in the pic

Hi Wazzbo. Ok thank you, the clutch does seem complete then. I took off the plate and springs and bearing my pic.
I've ordered some new springs and plates so maybe that will do the trick!
Ps: is it possible to push the clutch in against the springs. Ie test that it's working by hand? It's just the while clutch seems so tight and stiff, I don't understand how it releases and engages.

You won't be able to do it by hand there's to much spring tension. Clutches are a b*gger for the plates sticking when they haven't been used for a long time.
