Hi, it's Ben again. I've got a real problem on my hands at the moment, the SD won't start. Checked the plugs and i've got no spark what so ever, changed the CDI and HT coil (thingy) but still nothing. Whats worse is i rely on it for work so i've not been able to go in today Only thing i can think of changing is the stator behind the flywheel, and i can't do that as i've not got the puller tool. Any ideas? Cheers

I think there may be a thread on here somewhere as to using an old oil filter bolt to remove the flywheel, if youv'e got an old bolt?

Have you checked your kill switch.

You can just disconnect the kill switch. Ifrc it's the black/white wire on the cdi - the single short wire from the cdi to a nearby bullet connector. If you pull that, you've taken the kill switch out the equation. Good luck!

I had the same problem recently and in my case it was the stator , if all connections to,cdi , coil etc are good and clean and plugs are in good condition sounds likely it,s the stator , there was a flywheel removal bolt on ebay for around £8 and worth every penny ....

I just use the oil filter bolt as I have a spare in the garage. You'll either need a counter-holding tool to hold the flywheel or an impact wrench to shift it. It's a press-fit onto the taper and with the right tools it's a piece o' piss to remove but without them it's a right old palaver.
Unless you have the tools handy, rule out everything else first. As I understand it, if the stator fails on one ignition coil winding, the other would still spark so you'd get a spark but only half as often as you should. If the coil pack fails, you'll lose spark completely and to me that sounds more like your problem. Is the replacement coil pack a known good one? Have you checked ALL of the wiring for breaks / corrosion? Pull apart and clean all connectors under the reg/rec unit. It's free and doesn't require any tools.
Also, make sure you unplug the black bullet connector coming off the CDI for trouble-shooting as already mentioned above. If let's say for example your ignition switch is donald-ducked, and is permanently earthed then it will turn over OK but it'll never spark. Don't ask me how I know that...
Good luck, I hate trouble-shooting electrical gremlins. That might well be why I built my loom from scratch and had the stator rewound!!

hmm well i don't know if it helps, but when i had this problem, my bike started ok idled fine and when i went to rev it up a bit it died and didn't come back again. Tried taking the black wire with white stripe out and still nothing. (i know that the HT coil pack is good as i borrowed it off a working bike), i have checked all the connections under the left side cover, all plugs look fine and not really corroded. (everything else works on the bike just no spark ) Cheers for the help and advice, hopefully we'll get to the bottom of this

A few people on here have had no spark due to the stator giving up, recently, but in my case it was the cdi. The bike had been running fine for a couple of months last summer, after an engine rebuild, then one ride, setting off home, it wouldn't pull over 30mph. After a couple of miles, it cleared & ran fine for a week. Then it did exactly the same again. Next time I came to use it, it wouldn't start - no spark. Disconnected the b/w wire & tried another coil with no luck, then tried another cdi & it started straight away & has been running ok since. Do you have another cdi to try?
