BTW can someone please confirm for me whether the master cylinder reservoir and cap on this model were originally black gloss or black matt?

If you are refering to your last photo, that is an aftermarket part, looks like D Silvers to me, the finish is a sort of flat/satin black

Oh, I hadn't realised that it was not standard. Should the bike have the same reservoir as the earlier bikes then? (I know that there was a different number on the bottom of the casting for the 250 and 400 ones, I looked into that for my 1979 250, but I had just assumed that this one was some sort of later upgrade). If it is the same as all the earlier models then would it be gloss or matt?

There was a size difference for the 250 and 400, the 400 being larger capacity. Other members will be more exact i am sure but the cost of refurbing an original part can cost as much as two aftermarket reservoirs, but if you are after originality? and you have the money lol!
