Hi, Can anyone advise me, should the dipstick be threaded all the way down when one wants to measure the oil level on a SD or should it be rested just sitting on the aluminium and not threaded down?
As there is nearly a half inch of thread on the dipstick, then there is a big difference in the readings between the two different methods.

I was sure you warm engine to running temp and just push dipstick in WITHOUT screwing in to check level as there is a massive difference someone who knows for sure hopefully will let us know but I'm pretty sure you do not screw it in

just checked the rs manual, and it says make sure its on centre stand, unscrew dipstick, clean the stick with a cloth.
then insert back in to hole, and do not screw it in, so dont know what i was thinking, bad day.

I checked the oil level again this morning using the correct method as described by everyone here and I found that it was just at the low mark. After I toped it up with 10W40 I then found that it is now about 3/4 inch above the full mark as I must have put in too much oil. Just wondering should I take out some of the oil to bring down the level, is there any risk that I might blow gaskets if I leave it the way it is now ?

any times I've ever over filled an engine with oil the excess has just come out of the engine breather. up to you if you want to drain some out, its a 5 min job to drain the oil out the sump plug and pour most but not all of it back in.

I just discovered now that although I asked the lady in the filling station for 10W40 motorcycle engine oil she actually sold me a litre of 10W40 car engine oil, I put about a quarter litre (or less) of this oil into my CB400n, I wonder will it be ok
