Well done in sorting that one Ian , I've done similar usually because I reach for an inappropriate item instead of taking two steps to fetch the right thing !
FWIW I usually just turn the engine until I'm convinced the follower is on the base circle of the cam , there's a big tolerance of rotation before the valves start to close again , not correct but works for me . Also prevents the problem my previous 2T owning friend had when he studiously set up the marks then wound off the adjusters to get clearances correct - ended up with a very rattly engine having set it on the wrong stroke . Happy New Year .
I know just what you mean Ian, I was looking for some kind of metal rod I could drop down, saw the pencil & thought ' that'll do'. I can usually tell if the valves are off the cam lobes by looking at the camshaft or if I'm at TDC on the wrong stroke by wobbling the rocker arms up & down to see if there's any play, but on this engine you can't see the camshaft & the valve clearances are so small it's difficult to feel any play. Plus there's no slot on the end of the camshaft like the SD. At least I'll know better next time - I hope!

brakes we all need them the problem in the uk is what they are made of are environment design and lack of use.all motorcycle brakes today are all designed the same some alloys react more than others but they all end up with sticking brake.with the crap on the road reactions to brake dust and other things the outer seal that is there to stop crap getting to the inner the alloy reacts and pushers against the piston then you have sticking brakes.seal kits are about Β£10 for these blue spot and nearlyevery bike i have had or still have have benefited from caliper maintenance.

First off, apologies to Daveh. I've had this SD rear rack hanging in the shed for a few years since I replaced it with a nicer chrome one. I was going to get rid of it on the forum, but then along came the Triumph 400 & it needed a rack. Triumph seem to do one, but it looks to be the only one atm & they haven't reached the dealers yet. By the time Dave put his 'rack wanted' in the 'For Sale or Wanted' thread, I'd already attacked mine with a hacksaw to see if I could make it fit the Triumph - no good for a Superdream now, sorry Dave! Finally got it painted & fitted to the Triumph today. The remaining brackets on the rack were pretty close to the right spacing to fit the original Triumph grab rail mountings, I just needed to open out the holes a bit to get the bolts to fit Now I can finally get the top box on

Looks a good fit on the Triumph Ian. It's looks around similar size to the one DFS has. I'm probably looking for something that does not exist, i.e a small rack that is probably half that size. I don't plan to fit a top box. Just want somewhere to put my sandwiches π₯ͺ π

Know what you mean Dave, the old style racks for the SDs are large (& heavy), That one's only a temporary fit 'till the Triumph version becomes available. A few years back I had a YBR 125 as a winter hack. They have a small rack as standard but it was fine for the Givi plate & top box. All the racks I've seen for the SD are a large, so I think you'll probably look out for something you can chop about & adapt to fit the SD to get what you want.

Yeh, I think that's what I'm going to have to do. Meanwhile 'in the shed' I'm starting to look at re- doing the seat base as I have the new cover.

Similarly, if my welding was up to it I could have made it sit a bit lower by extending the remaining mounting brackets a bit but it does the job for now, that's the main thing.

Put a sandwich box under the seat Hey, we have big sandwiches down here! Don't want to squash them. π
I remember taking my sandwiches to work in the dummy tank of my Ariel Leader back in the 70s - room for the largest butties. It was disappointing when, many years later, Gill got an early Virago 535 with a similar under seat petrol tank & dummy 'normal' tank - it even had a false petrol cap, but was completely empty, with no access to stash anything in it. My CB500 wasn't bad though, it had a large box under the seat above the engine, which got it quite warm. I once baked a couple of jacket potatoes then stuck them in there to keep warm while we road to Castletown to watch the evening Southern 100 racing

So will be looking out for something I can modify.
