My Guzzi Cali went tonight so my black 400 has become my only bike on the road. Now I'm 6ft and 16+ stone, so all things considered (coefficient of fatness and drag) what top speed should be achievable

Rich I think that's a bit optimistic only 103 flat on the tank with a small Japanese test rider on a brand new bike

I've never ridden a SD 400, I used to own the Suzuki GSX 400 & that would hold just over 100mph

once rode a 400 home for a mate (he’d just bought it) and knocked it up to 90 for a long sweeping bend and half way round the crappy burmese rubber tyre on the rear decided to cook it felt like I’d got a puncture, so after slowly easing the throttle down, getting it back under control and emptying my boots I decided slow and steady was the order for that bike. never rode it again it was a lurid shade of pink...

The silver UK 400 SD was discontinued in 1980.
I wonder why? In a nutshell there was more liability in having it on the road than not.

The official silver (actual) 250N’s performance details where destroyed in a mysterious fire in 1983.
Hmm. Draw your own conclusions.

They did'nt want to affect sales by letting people know how slow they were

They did'nt want to affect sales by letting people know how slow they were Quite the reverse in my thoughts......the reds were pumped out to the learners.......red for danger got seriously played down these years. They created an accidental monster (silver 250) and they knew it.
