Before you do pull it (perhaps) can I say I find it a salutary lesson in what can go wrong even when we think we have control over what we are doing. I have three bikes in my integral garage and assume all is well with them in a fire risk sense - fuel off, fuses in place, wiring intact etc etc. and yet my oldest bike has magneto ignition, a modern dry battery and, now I think of it, no fuse (they didn't back in the day). So your account means I will be having another think about what I must do to know a flare up is improbable if not entirely impossible. And of course, you did well to save the house, garage, bike and yourself in the circumstances - had the tank gone up, well, it doesn't bear thinking about. Cheers Bugsy, That's the description of what happened over now anyway - and it's a case of looking into why (more than the what) it happened. I have found out a bit so far so it would possibly be beneficial to share. Although not Superdream, I believe it could ring true on any machine at some point - and more importantly, change behaviour particularly with regard to leaving them unattended whilst running. As Rich said a few weeks ago......if it saves at least one person's garage or home being damaged then it has a purpose.

I'm not suggesting there is anything wrong with Honda's products and that they can cause fires......I've been around them for too long to think such a thing. But after this experience I needed to know why my bike caught fire. So approx a week after the event, I did some looking around google. Only thing I could find was someone suggesting that Jellymoulds 'had a tendency to catch fire'. Although very unfounded (I'd certainly never heard of such a thing), this was that internet page:

Subsequent investigation has been an eye opener. One thing I have learned is never to jump to conclusions.....even when compelling info may be available right in front of your nose. A real roller coaster so far........solved yet? Not really.....thought it was.......but no, I don't think so.....this is where you guys may be able to help.

Wasn't happy with those chats mentioned on 'forums' I found on the internet. You have to be very careful with forums and what you take from them - a lot of the time people will put out what they may actually want you to believe (or actually believe) with an ulterior motive, ignoring facts totally.......this also applies to other non-referenced sources on line such as Wikipedia, Facebook etc. Anyway, I had no firm proof that the CBR600F Jelly Mould had any sort of problem or past recall issue relating to fires. But I just could not leave it. Something was nagging at me to search harder. At this juncture, it is worth stating that 100% there was no smell of fuel in the garage prior to the fire or even the actual running.....because I am sure some of you (as I would too) would be thinking that a simple perished pipe (for example) on a 27 year old bike is going to probably be the cause......but I assure you, no smell of leaking or seeping fuel was evident prior to this - and under her clothes she is 'stock'......a genuine 12k mile bike.....no one had been messing with her prior to the blaze.....I'd have known if things did not look factory. A week or so after the incident I googled some more. And bingo, there it was. This was the initial on line 'find'...... www.japanesesportcars.com/recalls/honda/1989-honda-cbr600f-recall_63089.htmWhich in turn lead me to this, via good old fleabay:

Don't run them on cardboard etc as I believe the fire was slightly accelerated because of this - a lesson learned - fire came close to wiping out all of the bikes in the garage.

Part number 16950-MT6-305. These are for sale all over ebay......even DS has seven currently in stock. This is the part (kit) that the modification uses. Essentially, the tube is longer than the one fitted at the factory, coming in at 550mm. But wait, upon inspection my tube was already 550mm. Being a 1990 bike, this was probably no surprise. Either way, that tube did not have a run clear of the lower left hand fairing, it must have been hitched slightly upwards or slightly curled into the fairing.

So surely, mystery kind of solved? The contacts in the fuel pump must have ignited the vapour in the breather tube and the fire spread upwards from the the end of the pipe 'shooting flame' setting fire to all in its path? Just as the recall sheet suggested, this is what happened to my bike. Yes the pipe was the newer safer length but the fact it was not routed past the fairing to the floor caused the problem?
This is what I believed until last week when I finally had time to get the tank off - and I was surprised at what I found.
