Need to man up and press the starter button after few months of corrective 'fire damage' works. There are around five fire extinguishers in the garage now so what am I worried about anyway?.....I control this bike, it does not control me.......right? Wheel it outside first

Fingers crossed Nick I'm sure all will be well, keep us informed, my fire extinguisher was given to me this week by the fireman I deliver to I saw him at the bath & west show last week which reminded him he promised to grab me one, it now sits in my shed "just in case"........

Nick, you could see me out of a job mate! Not seeing the damage myself makes it difficult but such fires I’ve come across are complex when it comes to causation.
A property of petrol vapour that makes it behave unexpectedly sometimes is its narrow limits of flammability. Petrol vapour must be mixed with air in quite particular ratios and explains why if I unscrew the cap of 5 litre petrol can and drop in a lit match, nothing happens apart from a small flame at the spout. The air/vapour mix to to rich inside the can and this may explain the odd burn patterns you describe regarding the pipes on your bike.
Petrol vapour is also about twice the weight as clean air so descends in calm conditions.
An interesting read!
Regarding extinguishers, I’d go for either CO2 or foam. Forget water if petrol is involved and dry powder can do as much damage as the fire sometimes! At best it’s a nightmare to clean up afterwards.

Thanks Jim......your recommendations are duly noted.
In my mind, this whole affair was caused by the routing of that fuel pump breather pipe - you live and learn!!!. Mad but true.

Very pretty looking bike that! I've been reading through this thread and it's quite a saga! I actually have an old jellymould sitting in my back garden myself (it's been badly turned into a ratbike) hopefully I'll get around to restoring it at some point
