i was just thinking earlier about the fact I haven't kick started a motorcycle engine into life for around 15 years there is something satisfying about starting up a engine by kicking it over & I suppose there will be people who have never done this & never will, I suppose it will be just a memory we will pass on to the grandchildren, bit like winding windows up & down.

I always go out of my way to acquire a bike with a kick-starter - however, unfortunately, my gusset is not quite as photogenic as hers 😪😂😂

I only quote as I like seeing the picture time and time again 😃. anyhow I was just going to say I remember starting my dads Land Rover with a crank handle through the front bumper, also that was never as difficult as an old diesel mortar mixer you swing like mad pull a lever and if it doesn’t snatch back and brake your arm they fire into life. Anyone else had that lovely experience?

I've had a couple of boats with small diesels, one a 10hp single with a recoil starter like a small outboard, the other a 20hp twin with a starting handle. Same procedure you describe - activate the decompressor, get the engine turning, then drop the decompressor. They would start easily on the button, but never got either to start by hand. Years ago, I regularly used the starting handle on my Sunbeam Rapier, it was fairly easy, same as a kicker, turn 'till you feel compression, then a big heave.

During Classic TT, I noticed quite a few had electric starters on their BSAs, Nortons & the like, must be quite a bit of demand for such conversions from my generation

Didn't have it long though, it was falling apart so we got shut & bought a Bedford Workabus. Had some fun in that.
