Definitely a contender. My job used to take me regularly to Sellafield & I loved taking that route on the way home if I got away early. Had to turn back more than once as it started snowing as I climbed up. Never done it on a bike though. Hmm there's an idea.........

A fantastic road I discovered in 1983 when travelling to Hexham from the M6. I was on a Guzzi California (Black and White) which took all the climbs, twists and turns very well on what was a fairly quiet route then though it gets hectic at times these days. Apart from the crotch rocket brigade the would be Tour de Wherever riders wobbling about or pushing uphill make things tricky and the Police will scoop you up if you do transgress (quite rightly). Best ridden on a smaller bike (my G3 Matchless ideal, 250 SD ditto) where 60 is a significant speed.
Thing is, there are many more roads in Cumbria, Northumberland and County Durham that are far quieter and at least as good to ride. Try the B6276 Brough to Middleton in Teesdale road for a start and then perhaps the road north out of there to Stanhope. It is endless - few know Co Durham for what it is: spectacular. I used to live in Derbyshire - Durham is not dissimilar without the traffic.
If I find the right runabout I will have to set up a ride out...

absolutley bugsy, I used to live just outside kirkby stephen so know a lot of the roads around cumbria and county durham and I agree that lots of bikers seem to miss out on the north east when theres some spectacular scenery and amazing roads. barnard castle up past high force to alston is a particular favourite run mainly because I get to come back down hartside...

Rarely saw another vehicle on it on my wintry mid-week trips back in the early 80s, Hardknott & Wrynose were the same. Can imagine they're very different nowadays.

You would not have wanted a brew with a spotty faced 15 year old and his geeky mate

Turns out Gill was up that way in the early 80s too, stopped off for a break in the Lakes on her way from Essex to Edinburgh on her GPX. Just setting off to return home, you can tell it was the 80s, and Scotland so likely to be wet! Beginning to think maybe it was busier in the 80s than it is now!
