erm early eighties I was probably braying my old xr75 round the fields (I was 9 when I got it), the cafe up there would have been in full swing though at that time? Cafe sadly gone now as it burned down last winter. Roads up here are superb in spring/autumn but summer can be a chore with tourist traffic, especially on the narrow stuff.

yeah sad really (about the cafe) the first time I ever came down the pass was the mid nineties and in those days the old cafe was just abandoned, then it got a revival and I believe it had a good reputation. but as listey says above, it was missing half its roof from fire damage, there was a van there serving food and brews and a couple of bikes parked up but I didnt stop as I was looking forward to the run down.

You need to go UP from the penrith side. Much more enjoyable and far safer if "giving it the beans" 😁

The "black mountain road" from Llangadog to Lower Brynamman (as tested by a few of us a couple of years ago) is quite a nice one too.

We enjoyed that one too Irene. We're going to Langollen at the end of June & again for Llanbikefest in August, so we might try it again if we can drag ourselves away from our favourite coastal rides there (and if we can remember the route )

Back to the original question - for an easy but spectacular ride A82 Glasgow to inverness, for fun the cat and fiddle, for plain hard roads to ride on the pass of the cattle. The NC500 is the route to take if you have time - campervans not with standing. a marvellous ride (weather can be interesting though). Never done it on a "classic" bike though - the Vstrom is ideal for these longer trips!

my only experience of Hartside was last Summer when it was hammering it down with rain, torrents of water and $hit running across the tight corners, 8 degrees and low cloud so I didn't see much! ;-)
