Been doing more research and can find discs for about £55 ea, which is half what I'd seen earlier . Camchains seem available but not gasket sets ....in my ignorance I'd assumed it would be very similar to the SDs to reduce develpoment costs etc . Carbs are different , look to have a diaphragm , will be coming off for a clean , rocker cover held on by four bolts , camchain tensioner different etc . Whilst untidy it has not been messed with still original paint , grips etc so it deserves another chance 0 probably cheaper to have bought a better one in the first place but wheres the fun in that

Are there many bits for them on German eBay, Boje?
Just seen a CB350S on eBay for a shade under two grand by the way.

Funnily enough I just showed Mrs Boj that one ! . She did not show a lot of interest . Not looked on German Ebay as struggle linguistically , good idea though will have a look , don't know if they even sold them there .

I believe this model was known as the CB450S in Germany, Boje.

That helps a lot , thanks Fungo For a start it lead me to an online copy of the Honda workshop manual I would not have found otherwise , paper versions seem quite expensive . Was a bit dissapointed at the total lack of gasket sets both pattern and OE . Think I'd got spoiled by the parts availability of the SD and even my CL , I'd always found Honda were very good with parts support but a friend found he could no longer get original sprockets for his XR400 any longer so maybe that's changing . First thing I need to resolve is the slack camchain tensioner , I think/hope its the tensioner that seems to have got stuck , if it needs a new camchain I'm tempted to get one with a rivetted link - not my usual route but the lack of gaskets and the stuck front engine mounting bolt might send me that route . Poor old bike was complete 24 hours ago and is now looking very bare with the tank, seat , sidepanels , rocker cover and carbs off !

Parts availability is what put me off getting that VFR400R in the end. The model I was about to buy was never officially a UK bike but a home market model.
That said, I found a silencer for it etc in Japan.
As you say, we are spoiled with the parts availability on the SD.

From todays investigation camchain tensioner now appears to be fully automatic on the SG and the chain in my engine is well past replacement . Having said that the engine appears to run quite smoothly with good oil pressure etc , so I think I'll be putting a new camchain in it . I'm going to stop myself buying everything it needs in one go (shocks , brakes , seat cover etc) and just concentrate on getting the engine running to my satisfaction , so hoping a carb overhaul , camchain and engine service will do that . I'll report back on my glacial progress
