Hi I need to replace a Faulty Alternator on a 1978 CB400N Superdream. See Photo. (has the square Pick-Up) I have a (known working) Replacement available which I can use. See Photo. (has the elongated Pick-Up) My question is:- Are these Alternators Inter-Changeable? They have different Pick-Ups. The Screw Holes seems to be the same however. Anyone know? Hi Wilf, confused me here as to what you are describing?
Your first pic is a 250 NipponDenso generator, but it appears to be fitted to a 400? At least I think that is the bottom of 400 barrels....
Your second pic is a Hitachi FL114-04 generator as fitted to the 400's. Looks like it's been attacked by a chisel though!
Which do you have faulty, and which is the proposed replacement?

Hi So you are saying that the Upper Pic (Square Pick Up head) is in fact a CB250N Alternator.
It is fitted to a CB400N Superdream and was running until recently.

Hi Wilf. It looks as if your 400 has been fitted with a 250 alternator. This would probably work if the CDI unit from a 250 was fitted as the timing differences were not too far apart. However mixing and matching of CDI and alternator was a different ballgame. You would have problems for sure. It appears that you are about to fit a 400 alternator, this will be OK if your CDI is also a 400 unit. Can you tell us the numbers that are on the CDI unit? You will need to be sure that the stator, CDI and flywheel are for a 400. Mike.

Hi Thanks for your detailed reply. I think what I will do is to fit a CB250N Replacement Alternator as I have two of these. I will come back to you shortly.
Best Regards Wilf

That's what I am saying. It will have a number something like 0320000-06xx AVCC11 stamped around the rotor periphery.
Be interesting what CDI that bike has.....

Ah- Mike posted as well good.
Remember 250 generator was not so powerful in the watts department. 130W against the 400's 150W I think. SD gurus would tell you that was because the 400 got the QH headlight. But did Honda uprate the 250 generator later on when it got the same setup? Probably not- at least from the specs..
Another myth may be the incompatibility- I think Ian may be running a 250 CDI on a 400 genny.....

I fitted a spare 250 cdi I have, witbout any other changes & it's running fine. I never even noticed any change in performance, although that's probably down me being a slow old git anyway I have got a Rex cdi recently, but haven't got round to fitting it
