Dear all,
I'm in the process of rebuildiung my bike, and cleaned all the gunk from the crankcsases when I noticed, there are several cracks inside the lower crankcase where the circular dent is to accommodate the starter motor. They are all over that front area, 20-30 cracks at least an inch and longer but not too deep. Is this something, I should be worried about? A friend says it's normal and not structural, but I am somewhat sceptical about his analysis....

Some Honda castings were extremely poor quality in the areas not seen- look a bit like this?

Hi Crouchy, yes, very similar to yours. So , should I be worried?
Thanks,
Gabriel

I have seen marks like these on many modern castings (as distinct from the castings on my Brit bikes or earlier Italian and German machines). I don't think they are cracks as such but are mould marks or cooling irregularities or some such - artifacts of the modern die casting process. They don't go through and are not a risk I think, given I have never had an engine leak or "break" at such a line.
I would be interested to hear a metallurgist's view on this - anyone?

Hi Crouchy, yes, very similar to yours. So , should I be worried? Thanks, Gabriel I would not worry at all- I have seen 2 or 3 like this whilst others look perfect. It's a pain because the rough edges and cracks are difficult to clean is all. Lasted for over 35 years before you noticed 'em! Bugsy is probably right on the button with the cause.....

Hi guys, thanks for the information. They do not look to be too deep, I have had an another look and the situation is a bit less severe, than on crochy's pic. Now it would be great to find some 3bond locally and I can start with the rebuild
