Does sound like it'd be worth getting the RH engine side cover off and cleaning/checking the oil pump and pressure refief valve as a first cheap pass? Thanks for the input bojer, I have taken your advice, and found that on the later engines there is no pressure relief valve, I have stripped the pump and it is within service limits as checked with feeler gauges. However there are slight scoring marks please see photos, would these effect it's performance?

Doesn't look too bad in the pics ?, I've certainly seen worse , especially considering yours seems an extreme loss of pressure .
When cold mine keeps the oil light off for a few seconds when switched off with kill switch but only about a second when hot but oil light never come on with engine running .
Grasping at straws a bit but what oil did you use after the flush ? , happy all the flushing oil drained off ? I did have a spare oil pump but think I might have cleared it , I'll have a look if its there and better than yours if so you're welcome to it .

Thanks for the offer but I have plenty of engine spares so I can fit another pump, oil used after flush was a 20/50 engine oil (budget). I checked another pump I have and there was more resistance when you turned it so I thought that's it. So I fitted the other pump. I have just restarted the engine and the oil light is still on at tick over but goes out as soon as the revs are lifted, I will have to try another ride out and see but not too hopefull. Also the new oil had milky residue when I drained the engine like you get in a water cooled engine when the head gasket has gone, obviously not that as these are air cooled so would it be condensation?

What is it with the oil pressure light going out when the bike is revved ? I'm interested in this old Duke but it has the same issue as yours Carl. Could it be a serious problem? What's the worst case scenario? Anyone know?

FWIW , IMO (TLA anyone ?) an oil pressure light that come on at tickover means next to no oil pressure and it needs sorting . In a Ducati , if its not the pressure switch I'd be very wary

I think that's why it's up at only around a grand - but no one is biting the bullet as yet.
