I recently read a post by Fungobat, ranting why don't people do it correctly or something like that. He was referring to a missing spring on a oil filter, I have spent 15 minutes trying to find the same post alas cant find it. So my question: What is the function of the spring? As my 400NA is missing it also I have ordered one from DS as I didn't want to upset Fungobat

And the washer is always missing as well it was on both my superdreams & they ran fine so we need to know that as well what the spring & washer do ?

In my experience it's the washer that tends to be amiss, Carl. To be fair it's easily done - often stuck to the out going filter and chucked along with it.
I believe the filter is designed to 'float' a bit on that spring. And if the washer isn't there it is merely pushing against the rubber seal on one side of the filter (the spring).

The spring locates the filter in the correct position to allow the filter bypass to function correctly if needed.
The best way to understand what is going on is to look at the oil filter bolt? The flow of oil is through the filter from outside to inside, then through the holes in the outside of the hollow bolt and up the centre of the bolt to the engine.
But the first line of holes above the O ring at the head end of the bolt need to be left uncovered by the filter. Because inside the bolt is the filter bypass valve which allows the oil to flow into the bolt and past the spring loaded valve if the filter should ever get too blocked. The spring makes sure the filter keeps this area clear.
On the bolt then, you should have the next row of holes blocked off by the bypass valve plug itself, then 2 rows of holes which are the normal flow of oil into the bolt through from the outside of the filter.
Hopefully you still have the washer 15414-300-000 which goes between the spring and the oil filter? This is usually thrown away with the old filter as it usually stays stuck to it.....

As the others have already said regarding the washer! All the washer does is keep good engineering practice of acting as a hard ring for the wire of the spring to press on....

I am - but you wouldn't know it would you? I think it's what they call commitment. P.s - no that's not a seat mate - these generally begin 71200 and are vinyl in appearance.
