HONDA SUPERDREAM CB400N ENGINE (Year 1982)
I am working on this CB400N Engine which is mounted on the Bike. Replacing Cylinder Head due to broken off Exhaust Studs. (4)
Have removed the old Cylinder Head and Engine Barrel. I accidentally dropped the Cotter Pin fitted to the Chain Tensioner assembly into the Engine Compartment.(can not retrieve it)
Is it worth continuing with the Engine Rebuild? Would it be dangerous to Start the Re-Assembled Engine with this Cotter Pin still inside? Would starting the Engine result in serious damage?
Regards Wilf PS I am fitting new Gaskets as I go.

Hi.
Don't try to turn the engine over and yes it will cause serious damage. (May ok slowly by hand )
Have you got one of those magnets on the end of a telescopic rod. (If not put it on your to get list !)
look down the timing chain tunnel and see if you can see it. That's what I would use first.
You can get access to the lower part of the inside of the engine by taking off the clutch cover and again using a magnet.

Suspect you know the answer to this one ?! , that is that the spring clip is bound to "make friends with the camchain" or similar resulting in nastiness . IMO

Hi Wilf, welcome to the forum. If you can't get it out with a magnet, it's worth taking the engine out & turning it upside down - you might be lucky! I dropped a small socket in my 125 bottom end a few days ago & it fell out when inverted. Your cotter pin is smaller of course, so more likely to travel further & get stuck. It's not difficult to get the engine out now you've got the head & cylinder off. Whatever you do, good luck!

Not that I have tried it but could you drain the oil but remove the filter cover rather than the drain plug? if its in the oil the increased flow might pull it out with the flow? Maybe I am talking sh1te however

Need to put this post in the Help section.. Anyway welcome and hope you get your engine sorted.. Your issue is why I like to use an engine stand that fully rotates..you learn from experience as I dropped a copper washer from the head into the srx engine in a poorly lite garage Ended up getting another engine as I wrecked the cases splitting the engine...
