Why can't these shops be recreated? Surely the demand for vintage bikes is there?
Time has moved on of course (internet etc) but there must be room for a shop or two like this around the U.K? Maybe it's the darn rates that stops people having a go at it.

they certainly were What a strange bit of brickwork That brickwork reminded me of Stratford's 'Much ado about toys'.......(now defunct). It was an old bus depot I think:

Can you remember that smell when you walked into a shop like these? I must have just caught it having walked into the ones that were hanging on in the 1990's (and being mature enough to appreciate what I was inhaling).....
Rubber / Petrol / Alloy / Plastic / Chrome / Polish / Oil / Paint / Sweat / Tension............an exotic mix.

That's funny that as I had a mate say that my shed smelt of a 1980s bike shop, all those smells hanging around it's a fine place to hang out

I am convinced that the main drivers are petrol and rubber. When I've had a bit of a 'spill' I love walking in and sniffing it the day or two after - and drifting back to the good times....
The father-in-law disagrees - reckons such aromas damages his fine wines (stored away in the garage in a locked and sealed fridge).

I'm not sure about the petrol , petrols smells differently now and is fairly transitory , I think the old bike shop smells of oiled wooden floors with a hint of rubber
