Have decided to post here on the general section rather that of the 404 thread found in Superdream restorations (that one must log in for) in the hope that those of a lazier 'non-logging in type' may see it and post up some valuable advice.....so in other words or in a nutshell if you prefer, a wider audience that may be compelled to respond with advice after seeing it and therefore possibly offering some advice no matter how little or large or small or big or minimal or substantial. Anyway. I am lucky enough to have skanked a week off work this coming week. My intention is to whip the rocker cover off ANM at some point during this annual leave period (a genuine barn find not run since 1993) and just gawp at what I find - and upload pics on here of course. Maybe on seeing this, some 'in the know' could collectively decide if I should attempt to fire up this machine after 23 years.

I would try and fire it up but I bought a Kit car many years ago with a weather seized engine I freed up and ran too . My personal route would be to drop a teaspoonful of light oil down the plug holes (clean the spoon afterwards) and then remove the generator cover .Check sump oil level . With the plugs out I'd rotate or try and slowly rotate the engine via the generator securing bolt (anti c/w) . My concerns would be the bores being dry and possibly slightly rusty plus the chance of a valve hanging up - but I have never in practice had that as a problem . If it all turns over ok it might be worth pulling the rocker cover to make sure the valve clearances are something like they should be - if over large there is a chance the valve is not seating fully , then take the opportunity to lube the camshaft and fill the "wells" at the bearing ends . If all good so far , put the plugs in the plug caps and see if there is a spark - if there's a spark a drop or two of petrol down the plug hole (always complying with the appropriate safety and health precautions) should see it run - if only for a short time . There is a chance of the carbs being seized - butterfly shafts or the pistons or in the case of my CL both ! You might well need an engine strip to resolve sticky piston rings , hardened rubber seals , plain ol wear and tear or the reason it was originally laid up of course . But IMO none of this is compromised by turning the engine over carefully .

I think you made a typo above, didn't you mean a month off work - either that or your expecting a miracle
Keep the thread going and prove me a pessimist

Not too important FB , if you've got some 3:1 that'd be good , a traditional squirty can would make it easy . Just something to make things move a bit more easily . Maybe a drop or two of diesel ?- nice and thin and might help free off the rings a bit while still giving a bit of lube ......just don't like the idea of it turning over totally dry - bit cruel

Have you turned it over by hand yet, if it turns over I'd be tempted to fire it as it is just for the hell of it, I mean how much of a good testimony would it be to pay homage to these bomb proof engines if one could be fired from just a carb flush and fresh fuel and oil, after being stood so long.
