Coming home from a night shift at 3:30am you don't normally see anyone about in rural Warwickshire. Anyway, I was coming down the A429 about 45 minutes ago (unlit road, 50 limit) and to my surprise I spot a lone youngish girl, back towards me walking very slowly, slightly swaying....luckily she was wearing a bright top so I clocked her....but still had to edge my car out a bit.
Bearing in mind she had her back to the traffic as she was walking on the left and also there was hardly any pavement for her to walk on. A quiet-ish road at this hour but nonetheless in my opinion a main one and a dangerous one with traffic not always obeying the limit.
If you'd have also seen this, can I ask what you would have done next?

A tricky one Nick, a young girl, middle of the night, if you stopped you could end up in trouble with the law if she got scared and accused you of anything.
Then again its not good leaving her wandering down a lonely road at that time of night, especially if she was half cut, she is taking a risk, you never know who's around.
I'm not sure what I'd do..

Nice to have a response from some of you.
I pulled up in Stratford and looked for a patrol car. Sod's law dictated that wasn't one to be found....so I called 101 and reported the details. I hope she was okay in the end......if she was your daughter or relative then I hope you'd do the same.

Not many good Samaritans around. Ive picked people up that were in trouble & my car stank for a week after, or they had no idea who they were, and I took them to the police station in the end. My father keeps telling me off (im 40 mind you) as car jacking does happen now and then. Now, I ask if help is needed, re-assess, then / or call the police.

When I was in New Zealand (2000) me and my girlfriend hitch hiked everywhere.
Shortly after though the Peter Falconio thing happened in Oz.....made us think. It can happen anywhere of course, not just Australia.
I felt the safest in India believe it or not.

Nick I for one would have stopped and spoken to her, then called the police.
I would have stayed in the car, pulling up alongside her with the doors locked, then wound the window half way down to talk to her - this would enable me to make a judgement about her state of mind and whether she needed immediate help or not.
You did the right thing though as its very unusual for someone to be out at that time.
A few years ago I was woken after 1am by screaming and went out to investigate, across the road from our estate was 3 youngsters, two girls and a giant gorilla of a lad. One of the girls was bleeding heavily from the nose and the other girl was pushing the lad around. I called the police and described the scene then went back out with kitchen roll and a bottle of water - it transpired that the girl bleeding and the lad were together and had had a row in a pub, she smacked him one(brave girl!!!) and he put his arms up to defend himself and knocked her backwards and she fell and bashed her nose!!!! The lad was rather aggressive towards me to start off with but soon calmed down when I explained I was only trying to help. When the police did turn up I think they called them a taxi and sent them packing!!!
Unfortunately in today's society you never know whats going to happen and keeping yourself safe must be the highest priority whatever occurs!!!
