If a Superdream 400 CDI unit is different to a Superdream 250 why do my 400 and 250 have the same number on the case, I have just read somewhere that a 400 will run with a 250 CDI, but not very well.
Is there a real difference and how badly do they run?

070000-0421 is what I have. someone has posted on the Forum a pic of a 250 which carries the last four digits 0420 so is this the defining number?
cannot check the other yet as it is on my 400 and need to take the tank off this one is from the 250 and guess it must be a 0420
I removed a 0421 from the 400 as It was only running on one pot and tried the 250 just to eliminate or in this case prove a fault.

-420 would be off an earlyish bike- CB250N or CB250NA. -421 went on the later 250's. But never on a 400.
Timing for both bikes was 15 BTDC but the advance curves were quite different- 250 went all the way to 47 BTDC but the 400 stopped at 43 BTDC. And the CDI's were made by different manufacturers and were matched to their own, different generators...

The 400 runs hitachi electrics and the 250 are nippondenso, the 400 cdi have the number T1A01-20
The nippondenso cdi on the 250 have the number you have, I think the 0420 is also used on the 250 as well.
They will start and run on the wrong cdi but not very well, the ignition timing advance curve is different so the bike will not be firing at the right time when the revs increase.
It sounds like your 400 has a nipondenso cdi from a 250n fitted so it will not run well at all.

Thanks for that info guys looks like the previous owner was as well informed as me. Tt does run but it is a bit lumpy and that is why I asked the question before trying to tune it.
So it looks like the best option would be one of Rex's specials, ouch! that is in the absence of all other sensible options, and no doubt cheaper in the long run as well.
Many thanks Guys

Both crouchy and I have rexs cdi`s fitted to our 400`s and they run very well, better than with the original cdi`s, but we did fit them to bikes that were running ok anyway.

Did I see Rex's cdI on offer at £60 or was that just wishful thinking? Always the same when you do not need one.
So it's£99.99 then.
Mike
Thanks for all the great replies

Hi Mike. Just something I have thought of, are you sure you have the correct generator fitted to the 400. Someone in the past could have swapped over the complete system from a 250 and put it on the 400. Mike.

Have seen this too, as some people getting in a real pickle, mixing parts up between the models. It does seem very silly that the parts are different. But hay oh, that's the way its goes..

I clearly do not have a 400cc cdI so have bitten the bullet and gone down the Rex route, this will cure all my problems and I will live happy ever after
Or not

I think the Rex's 250 CDI's were reduced in price a while ago, but not the 400. In fact I had to wait a while for a 400 version as I suspect he makes them to order- despite the website stating they are in stock....

I have ordered one so just have to wait for delivery. Its just nice to have all the bits back in the frame and running and sounding better than last time is a bonus.
