Hi everyone
Saturday after a lot of re assembling bits she eventually started and did run on two eventually and then ran better than ever....... then.......
On weds I tried to start it and although it caught a couple of times it didn't fire up.... Too late to start investigating I left it ...
Tonight (Thursday) exactly the same, a bit of encouraging sounds...... some firing up but then...... nah........
Plugs were damp rather than wet, very petrolly smell in the garage though ........
SO
Could it be the petrol has gone off (it was from a plastic container from last May)
OR
was I just lucky?
Any advice appreciated!

Try it with some fresh petrol and you'll have your answer

I would expect the petrol to still be okay but there are quite a few different parameters to consider.
A) How old was the fuel in said container? B) How damp is the environment the bike lives in? The petrol could have water ingress C) Was it mixed with older (water ingressed) and thus heavier fuel that has a habit of staying near the bottom of the tank?
As our young accommodation specialist has already pointed out, you can't go wrong with sticking some new fuel in her then seeing the result.

Some fresh petrol and a good long run works wonders.

New plugs may help to get an old engine started after a long period standing.

Todays petrols go offryquick, The octane level can drop in a month, todays octanes are a long mix ofchemicals tgat degrade quick, Not like the old 4 star thqt hed a lot fewer chemicals, I certainelly wouldnt use todays petrol in a high performance engine (especially a 2 stroke) if it was more than a month old, Storing petrol in a plastic container is not good, They actually breath and moisture can an does enter through the placcy, Moisture and a percentage of ethenol does not go together well, there is enough moisture in ethenol as it is, our engines dont need this.

I think this may be my problem as it did fire up but only on the left side. I'm getting another set of plugs for the weekend so..... I'll get back when I have them in

A lot of them fire up on one cylinder if they`ve been standing a week or two mike, I cracked my 400 up on Monday, it hadn`t been running for about 3 or 4 weeks and its full of aspen petrol, that doesn`t go off but it still ran on one cylinder for a while until it got warmed up.
when its used regularly its fine ,cracks on on both cylinders from the word go, but leave it a week or two and it`ll crack off on one for a bit before the other kicks in.
