A new set of wheels has just landed at GB Towers - 4.0 Daimler - the top of the range model XJ40 from Jaguar. This was the car that 'saved' the Jaguar company in the 1980's under the management of Sir John Egan. (Ignore the plastic on the drivers window - usual XJ40 electrical gremlins....window wont come back up) When I worked in Central London in the 80's I used to see these everywhere - usually driven by middle aged blokes wearing red braces!!!! Try to remember when you last saw one on the road these days.......... Getting rather rare now. A bit of a 'marmite' car to some..........but I have to say, I like it!! And a damn sight cheaper than a MkII or E-Type!

Ha ha!! Surprisingly, it is as 'economical' as our motorhome. Anything from 25 to 35 mpg although if you use the full 4 litres then you can edge it down to the high teens. It is only going to be a 'high days and holidays' car anyway - no commuting - so the fuel costs will be a part of the 'fun' of ownership!!!
For £800, I think that will be cheap luxury!!!

Will do mate - I have a list of niggles that need sorting....not least that damn window!!! Interior is grubby but bodywork wise she is faultless - which is rare for these cars.

That bodywork does look fantastic & nice colour as well I do like Jags I used to drive them from the age of 15 as when I was growing up my dad used to take me gliding & we used to use old powerful cars to tow the gliders up jags, Granadas even a old hearse we used, great times for a 15 year old & I learnt to fly as well which was great but very expensive with only a paper round for cash to pay for it all

Talking of '80's motors......this was what I always wanted when I was at school.....went on to own a red one in the end.....the MK3 XR3i. The MK4 that appeared in 1986 just didn't have it for me.....again, a car one either loved or hated but good ones seriously accelerating in value of late - like most things from the 80's that was popular in the day. When they got a bit longer in the tooth they were rusty, had a rattly CVH engine, cracking dash top and a horrible image- - coupled to the fact that they were often targeted by thieves and thus insurance premiums became horrendous......but an 80's icon? YES YES YES.

It would appear that cars from the 80's - well, some of them anyway - ARE now starting the climb back up the ladder of desirability...and probably for all the usual reasons!
I remember those XR3i's new in the showrooms - and expensive too!!! But you will be very lucky to see one on the road today. Personally, back in 1982, I quite fancied the Astra GTE....never was much of a Ford fan myself even though I did end up owning a MKIII Capri 2.0 Ghia (oh the shame....) - in white!! I think it was the only Ford I ever owned.
