Has anyone ever stopped to think what the difference is with these carbs (if any) ?
My early (1978) CB400N has VB31-B carbs with an 'A' identifier in the little box - I am assuming these are the carbs that it left the factory with.
Can anyone shed more light? CMSNL looks a tad confusing on this (again).

Same as mine on my CB400NA - although these were sourced from Germany and also carry the A serial in the box (guessing they are from a kicker). Th originals were B serial on my CB400NA.......but still VB31-B.
Will be interesting to check out my NOS ones at the weekend to see what they show.

After closer inspection it looks as if all 400 SD carbs should be VB31-B.
The Haynes manual states VB31-A for earlier models - I think this is an error.

Yes they are all VB31B for the 400, then either A or B in the box. Cmsl and Haynes seem to be quite useless on some of this.
Quick look and the only difference in the original Honda lists between the two types are the vacuum top and piston. Would be interesting to compare and see what changed....

There are also C and D serial. Latest I've seen is D but would not be surprised if they went to E and F on the CB400NC / ND.
